Overall Rank = 1/75
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 1/12
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5. Quick hot shower and quick bite to eat. Left the house at 5:30. To the site at 5:45 and was still able to get the best rack spot despite transition opening at 5:30. I think there were many first time triathletes at this race and therefore they were reluctant to take the best rack spot.
Event warmup:

Short jog to see what the bike course was like at the beginning and then a quick swim in the pool.
  • 08m 21s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters

This was the first time I have ever done a pool swim for a tri. It was a nice change. I was about the 15th athlete to be sent off. I swam really hard and the overall time actually ties my PR for 500 meters. I actually finished in 8:17 but obviously you have to get out of the water and then cross the timing matt to get your split.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to do flip turns.
Kick more, it's a sprint so I shouldn't worry about my legs becoming fatigued.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s

Pretty good transition. I didn't clip my shoes in because there was a small hill right out of transition. I probably could have done so and will have to do so in the future at this race.
What would you do differently?:

Clip my shoes in.
  • 34m 4s
  • 20 kms
  • 35.23 km/hr

Biking is usually my strength and this was definitely the case for this race compared to the others. I rode as hard as I could the whole time. My cadence was around 90 for much of the ride. The only problem was that at about the 15 K mark I literally got stuck at a railroad crossing as a train was going through. It cost me about 15 seconds which wasn't too bad but still, very frustrating. There were two other athletes who were stuck before me and one said she lost at least 90 seconds. I didn't even wait for the cross gates to go up before I took off. If it weren't for this, I would have had the fastest bike split of the day as I was only 5 seconds off of that even with this mishap.
What would you do differently?:

Not get stuck at a railroad crossing. :)
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s

Good T2.
What would you do differently?:

  • 20m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 26s  min/mile

Really good run for me. The legs felt pretty good off the bike so I pushed pretty hard from the start and maintained that pace pretty much throughout. I really thought I had a chance at winning this thing so I really pushed hard the last half mile knowing that I'd be kicking myself if I lost by less than 30 seconds or something and I didn't give it my all. That being said, I really should be able to do this run around 19:30. Gotta put in the time especially doing speed work.
What would you do differently?:

Run slightly harder throughout.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and got some drinks. Found out that I had finished in 1st and I was pretty sure that was going to stand since I assume the athletes behind me probably weren't going to be able to put up a faster time unless they were a slower swimmer and a much better biker and/or runner. When I finished there were still about a dozen people who hadn't even started their swim yet so after the pool was clear I jumped in for a nice easy recovery swim.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

During the race, nothing. Before the race, needing to train more.

Event comments:

This was a great first race for this event. I look forward to coming back in future years.
