Subject: RE: Missed my Long Bike Treat it as mental preparation. Things may go wrong in the long day of an IM race and you need to be able to think calmly under pressure - whether its your goggles coming off, a puncture or getting a headache on the run - all of this things are traumatic if you don't have a plan to deal with them. People finish IM's after getting injured in their prep (me), having a concert going on until 2am on the night/morning of the race in Austria (me), having their HR monitor freak out and not be available from halfway through the bike (me). It's all part of the journey and why you will have a feeling of pride when you finish that lasts a life time. I always smile politely when people tell me they could do an IM race 'if they had the time' - dealing with adversity like blips in your training / race - big and small are just one of the reasons why it's about more than just time. Missing one session doesn't matter at all but what you can work on and think about (perhaps on your nice long run that's approaching) is how you can use some calming mental techniques to deal with them calmly so little things don't turn into big deals. Stress wastes energy and if there's one thing we don't have to waste in an IM it's energy. (congratulations on only missing one session to date by the way! I don't know anyone that's managed to hit that high a percentage of sessions before - you must be super organised) |
