Totally unexpected family crisis last evening.  Little sleep, woke up exhausted.  Scheduled to do 80 mi bike this morning (training for IMFL), but just didn't have it in me.  I haven't missed any of my training until today.  So now on top of everything else, I'm stressing about missing my ride!  I intend to be back on schedule tomorrow with my long run, but wondering how big a deal it's going to be to have missed a long bike?

Thanks KathyG, your response brought tears to my eyes.  I'm just so emotionally exhausted right now, and the thought that it interfered with training made it worse!  I'm not a top 10 Age Grouper....I'm a middle aged BOP'er who wants to complete one IM.  So I work hard to do the training my Coach gives me.  But you're right.  I can't change the fact I missed this bike, just have to let it go and keep pushing forward I guess.

Yep, you're fine. Most plans are written with the assumption that you're going to miss a day or two here and there, even some key workouts. Generally, unless you're planning to win the thing, as long as you do most of the workouts most of the time, you're going to be fine.

Also, good luck with whatever crisis is happening. Hang in there!

As others have said, no damage done.  I was a complete slave to my training plan for my first IM but also had to deal with "life" during prep for my second and missed a couple of long days....and was 30+ minutes faster on race day!  Think of it as a bonus recovery day and go out and kill that long run tomorrow.

OMG! That's horrible!!! Just playing! Shake it off! Life happens. If you have only missed one work out it's not going to affect you. You'll prob have a great run tmrw to make up for it! Train hard and don't worry too much over this little detail. We all do it, but it's done and over with. It's not going to make or break your race

I had the flu. Missed 3 days of training completely. Had to cut the rest of my training short for about 10 days after that. Probably should've skipped more training but I got paranoid about missing too much and for a week I was running and biking while coughing like a smoker so those workouts sucked. I missed two long rides in there. My current long training days don't seem to be any worse for it so I ain't worried. Like you, I'm a slow kid who just wants to see that finish line in less than 17 hours.

There was an interesting article in one of the tri magazines in the last few months, and though I can't remember the exact specifics (author, magazine, month, etc), the author noted that missing a 'long' or endurance workout is better than missing a key workout, or skill-related workout

Plus, I have always heard the 80 percent rule. You are going to be doing just fine. Seriously, you will do great.

Mover on, life happens and your body may thank you for the recovery time.

I totally understand the feeling of freaking out over missing long rides.  I trained for 8 months for my first IM and missed MANY long bike and run days in the final 3 months.  I also never made it to my peak days, due to a new job that I started 3 months prior to my race.  This new job interfered with my training schedule big time.

Sometimes missing the long days actually made my short day (1 1/2 hour runs, 3 hour rides) much better.  I felt great, set new personal bests and really just felt great.  Overall - it didn't seem to affect things to much...I just got back on track and resumed the training.  Did what I could.

I finished my IM in 14 hours 51 mins.  If you have not missed any training to date, and you are up to 80 mile rides - YOU WILL BE JUST FINE.... your body will probably enjoy the extra break and reward you.  I wouldn't sweat it at all, although I understand why it is stressful.

Good luck in your IM.  Sounds like you are going to do great.

Treat it as mental preparation.  Things may go wrong in the long day of an IM race and you need to be able to think calmly under pressure - whether its your goggles coming off, a puncture or getting a headache on the run - all of this things are traumatic if you don't have a plan to deal with them.

People finish IM's after getting injured in their prep (me), having a concert going on until 2am on the night/morning of the race in Austria (me), having their HR monitor freak out and not be available from halfway through the bike (me).

It's all part of the journey and why you will have a feeling of pride when you finish that lasts a life time.

I always smile politely when people tell me they could do an IM race 'if they had the time' - dealing with adversity like blips in your training / race - big and small are just one of the reasons why it's about more than just time.

Missing one session doesn't matter at all but what you can work on and think about (perhaps on your nice long run that's approaching) is how you can use some calming mental techniques to deal with them calmly so little things don't turn into big deals.

Stress wastes energy and if there's one thing we don't have to waste in an IM it's energy.

(congratulations on only missing one session to date by the way! I don't know anyone that's managed to hit that high a percentage of sessions before - you must be super organised)

Hopefully you have taken care of the family crisis. Quite a bit more important I would think than a workout 10 weeks from race day. You will probably find your legs will feel fresher on your next long bike. Relax and good luck!

Yes, my family crisis resolved (for the most part).  Thanks to all of you, I relaxed and just got back on track. I had a great run that next day!  Then this past week, with travel plans for the holiday, I had to do an 80 mile bike before leaving town.  Only way to get it done was to get up at 3am and get on the trainer.  Yep.....I did 5 hours on a trainer.  Thankfully had some good documentaries saved on the TV, just dug down mentally and got it done.   I've learned it's okay to be a little selfish and keep my eye on the prize, also learned I can dig down mentally if I need to and get it done.  THANK YOU to each of you who offered your support, it meant alot.  Only 2 months to IMFL....I'm so excited!!!
