Doing my first triathlon in over 24 years tomorrow morning and the forecast is for thunderstorms.  Ugh.  I'm not wild about running or biking in the rain, much less heavy rain and wind; I'm figuring no race while lightning is in the area.

I sure hope the forecast is wrong.

I've got a HIM on Sunday and have been obsessively checking weather.gov to see...good news is yesterday there was an 80% chance of thunderstorms with 1-2 inches of rain...as of this morning the chance is down to 30%...let's hope it works the same for you. I hate running in wet shoes.

If I paid the entry fee, I'm racing rain or shine.  I'm too cheap to just give up the money.

Me too!! Are you doing the Esprit Triathlon in Montreal?

I'm nervous about biking in the rain - I hope there aren't too many crashes

Rain (and the heavier, the better) can be one of your best race-day friends.  You all are like most folks, rainophobic, but if you can just get your head around the fact that rain won't kill you, then you can enjoy a significant mental (and physical) edge once you get out of the water.  and seeing as how you're soaked due to the swim....what's to lose from just staying wet?  So many people will just kind of mentally collapse like a cheap tent in the face of rain/deluge conditions, but just commit to staying wet and you'll prosper relative to most everybody else.  Just take care when you corner on the bike!SurprisedSmile

My own bit of weather-induced, race-day angst comes in the form of Tropical Storm Leslie, due to steer out to the mid-Atlantic.......but then kick up big water along the New England coastline on Sunday.   That's the day I'm on for the Maniac Triathlon, in ME, but I have a wee hunch that the swim might be turned into a 1-mile run.  I hope that's not the case, but I'm bracing myself for the distinct possibility.  I'm driving 8 hours each way for the joy of doing a race with an ocean swim, and would even brave big surf if that was what is required, so I really need Leslie to settle down, or choose another more far-flung path, or just out-and-out behave herself.  Is that too much to ask??

My fastest HM was in the pouring rain... Middle of summer and I was expecting 85-90 degrees and it was 70 with the rain. I don't like training in the rain, but have a blast when it rains during a race. It's like being a little kid and plaint in the rain! Maybe because I'm actually 28, going on 15 years old.Be careful turning on the bike, and go out there and make th best of it!

I love running in the rain.  Biking not as much.  Swimming is OK so long as there is no thunder, otherwise I am out of there!!!  It's a huge mental boost for me.  I'm BOP and close to DFL, but it takes all the pressure off and I just do better.

I did Maniac last year.  Nice race but even last year with no hurricane I thought the waves were fairly large for Maine/NH.  It's a beach-run in start, so make sure to keep your mouth closed getting past the waves (ask me how I know!).  If it's choppy you might want to take half a dramamine.

P.S.  I think the Wallis Sands, NH tri is the following week.  Haven't done it but am familiar with the area and it's gorgeous!

Good luck!

matcrawf -

Yes, you're right -- training in the rain is less fun than racing in it.  And, actually, the only part of rain-training I don't enjoy is on the bike, where I worry about all that mositure getting into my bike's system.

You're 28 and maybe have an excuse.  I'm 63.5, and don't really have one.  But kind of like you referring to being 15, whenevere my former students (grade 5s) asked me my age, I'd only say something like "I try to act 12 years younger than half my age".....and let them try the math from there!

swimhappy -

Wallis Sands is on the 23rd, a weekend that has a couple other saltwater race swims in the broad northeast.   There is also ITPman out of Darien, CT, swimming in L.I. Sound, and Bethany Beach, DE, swimming guess-where.  the following weekend are two on the Jersey shore, one Sat and one Sun, about six miles from each other.  The second one is run by a local BSA troop, and is charging only $40 for a decent-sounding sprint that IS USAT-sanctioned!

Wallis Sands has a great rep, and if my swim tomorrow is surfed-out by Leslie, then maybe I'll be back on the N.E. coast on the rebound in two weeks!
