Alright all you IM veterans, I am looking for a good comparison of the two races. Not necessarily on course as I can read the differences, but more on KQ possibilities, qualifying times, competition, etc.

I just finished IM Wisconsin and although I finished I am upset with how it went. I had a 1:00.xx swim, 5:15 bike but, for the first time ever, cramped at mile 5 of the run. This took me out and I walked/ran to a 4:24 marathon. I finished in 10:49, an hour slower than my goal. If I would have hit my goal (9:35-9:55) it would have put my top 3 and possibly in 1st in my AG (25-29) thus a KQ.

So with that said, I am looking for my next race in hopes to KQ. Arizona is a perfect choice as I have family living in Tempe. Would you say it is harder/easier to KQ at one or the other. I am having difficulty figuring this out as the courses are so different making it impossible to compare finishing times between the two. Not that I am looking for an easy way to KQ but do not want to plan on a race where I will come in 20th and have my best race ever when that same performance at another would have put me top 3. Thoughts, anyone?

If you are trying for KQ, I would assess your strenths and weaknesses and pick the course that best suits your strengths. Qualifying times can be somewhat generic.

Have you looked up the past year results?   It really comes down to who shows up on race day though

I've never done WI, but unless the bike course is all downhill, there is no way it would be faster than AZ. Keep in mind that AZ brings out the total cream of the crop in age groupers...so you better bring your A game and have a perfect race.

Thanks for the responses. I think the one that really sticks out to me is hearing that AZ brings out the "cream of the crop" for AG'ers. This is what I was looking for as I know it depends on the year and who shows up at any race but was not sure if any races were known for the best of the best.

I'd hate to be a KQ hopeful and have the best race of my life and come in 20th when it would have been good enough at another IM for the win in my AG. I already know I need the best race of my life to KQ so this is why I am analyzing all of this so much. Even though I have family in AZ and that race would be fun, my goal is to position myself to have the best shot at Kona. My strength is the bike, so maybe I should start looking for the harder (hardest) bike courses.

I am not so sure about the 'cream of the crop' at one vs other. But if biking is a strength, WI is a very good choice.
