Subject: Protein types??

Well I am really confused on the whole protein shake issues.

I am trying to lose weight while training and it's been suggested I have a protein shake in the morning to replace breakfast.

Question is what is recommended?  I went to my local Vitadigest store and there was an entire wall of different protein formulas and honestly I was so overwhelmed I couldn't do anything.

I understand that whey is a dairy product and have also been told to try and cut out dairy while trying to lose pounds so is there a better option of a shake than a whey based one?

ANY advice or opinions would be extremely helpful, my friend is also in the same situation while not training for a tri, she is training and losing weight and wants to know if the whey shakes she's been using are the right ticket or not.

So anyway thanks for the help in advance.

Dirk

Whey protein is one of the best powdered protein sources available.  I'm not up on the whole cutting dairy to get lean bandwagon, I'm down 50 lbs this year from 225 to 175 and still losing, and I have a dairy high diet.

The main issue with a diet high in dairy is all of the extra calories that come from fat.  Since I don't really eat much with cream in it ( such as cream soups etc. coffee creamer, cream sauces etc. ) ice cream, shredded cheeses as a topping, butter, "dairy" which can be a high source of unnecessary extra calories in the diet, isn't an issue.

I also only drink skim milk, mostly for the taste of it.

Whey is fine to use, as long as you're not using a mass gainer compound, or something that is LOADED with carbs for flavor.  Just a relatively pure, maybe mildly flavored whey protein isolate doesn't have the extra fats typically associated with "dairy" so it doesn't present a problem.

It's easily absorbed by the muscles as well  which is great after a workout or in the morning.

Good luck.

If you are going to use Whey, look for Whey Protein Isolate.  Lower in carbs, fat, and sugar.

This is what I get and where I get it. It works for me.

Breakfast with almond milk, med banana, and frozen blueberries.  Sometimes post training with the almond milk.

I just use it when I need to hit my protein needs for the day, particularly after a hard workout.  A good fruit and milk smoothie with some protein is my preferred post thrash workout meal.

You can have it for breakfast too with milk, some people put it into their oatmeal too!

same here w/different frozen fruit (banana's freeze great!) plus 0% plain FAGE yogurt (22gprotein per 1 cup) Blend w/protein powder (I use Pure Protein Whey, vanilla) I buy it at Target/Walmart. Holds me over most of the am!

You could use Oikos, it's just that FAGE doesnt have the sugars (probably why it doesnt taste great plain!) I use around 1cup or less, depends what else I put in and how thick I want the smoothie. I use a Ninja blender, works great! Sometimes If I make too much I just freeze it in ziploc and throw it in blender another am when I'm running late.

Whey protein isn't a dairy product, but casein based protein is.  Whey will get absorbed faster, casein more slowly.  Either one is probably fine unless you have lactose issues.

Or you could just try Tim Ferriss' idea: 30 g of protein within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning.  Doesn't matter where the protein comes from (a shake, eggs, steak, whatever).  He's had good success with a number of people dieting in this manner, and it's the only change he makes to their normal routine.

We derive whey from cow's milk, so not sure why you're saying that it's not a dairy product while casein is?

Protein in cow's milk is 20% whey and 80% casein.

Whey protein comes from milk. How is that not a dairy product?
