I signed up for my first Iron distance event.  The HITS Napa Valley event in April 2013.

Last event was the Enviro-Sports Napa Vintage half iron distance event in 2011.  I finished but not in time and it was pretty ugly truth be told.  I am in WAY WAY better shape now both mentally and physically so I think I have a shot at finishing in time, but it is nerve wracking now that it's official to be completely honest.

I figured I would post up here to make it even more official you know once you tell eveyone you are more committed, so now you know.

Let the fun begin.

Ok, 'you're crazy'!

But you are right on several positive points.  You struggled through 70.3 and came away beaten but not broken.  You recognize that you are more determined.  You have a. registered and b. told people about it, so you are invested and committed.

Now turn that enthusiasm into fitness through consistent training.  IM finishes are the result of consistent training, many workouts every week, for many months.

'How far was your run today?' Not 'did you run today?'.  Build the base.  High frequency, easy pace, workouts.

Don't worry, you're not TOO Crazy :p  You've already finished a half!

I have never done a triathlon, and I am signed up for both the Oliver half Iron in June as well as Challenge Penticton ( formerly ironman canada ) in August.

I'm the one that's actually crazy. :p

That being said, good luck!  Put in the hours, race with a plan and you'll come out alright.

THanks guys,

Right now I am still formulating my race day plan.  So far I'm keeping it simple:

FINISH in UNDER 17hours.

Nothing big a few fun run type things is all since the HIM.

But I have kept up on my training (sort of, lol).

NO DOUBT it is going to be a struggle for me, but I am kicking it into high gear now in hopes of being less of a struggle so to speak.

I'm shooting for 12 hours if possible.

I might break my body attempting it :p   It would be easier if it was a flatter course though....

My goal (today anyway) is 16 hours 45 mins.  That way there is a cushion so it's OBVIOUS I made it in time.

LMAO!!!

The goal for any first time 140.6 should be 'finish (sub 17 hours), vertical and smiling'.

Or at least two of the three.

Good luck.  Nothing changes your training more than the fear of 140.6.

Have fun and you will be fine.

you don't have to be crazy to do an IM, but it certainly helps.

Good luck.

By the way did you pick 16h 45m just so you could experience one of those awesome, big crowd, high energy finish chutes!

Well DAMN,

Visit to the doc yesterday with foot pain.  Took xrays and no stress fractures, but they are calling it prestress fractures or something like that.

Podiatry surgeon says no training until I am pain free just walking for 2 weeks.  UGH.  He doesn't even really want me swiming, I can use an incumbent style bike but that's about it.

Story of my life.

not sure what his issue with swimming was, but from everything I found online swimming is okay I just need to not push off the wall with my foot is all.

But looking at timing I think my April Ironman hopes are fading FAST, there just WON'T be enough time to be ready is all.

So I am thinking about Vineman in July, that should give me enough time to be ready, but we shall see.

Quick update:

Foot is still bothering me so my 2 week painfree time hasn't started yet

The reality is that there is just no way I will be ready for the HITS event in April at this point, So I am going to shift to the Vineman Ironman towards the end of July.

I figure if I get back to training Feb 1. that will give me a SOLID 5 months to get ready.  I am slipping a lot not being able to train right now, mentally it's been a big downer and I need to snap out of it and start eating better and just generally get back into shape.  So I am just hoping that the 5+ months will give me enough time to train injury free for the Vineman.

I injured my knee several years ago and had 8 months no running. I got in the pool as much as possible.

Just "Do It"

And try aqua jogging if you can. It's very challenging and will keep up your running fitness. You can Youtube it for the how to's if you are interested. I did that when I had heel pain in August.
