Within limits, particularly for beginners, it seems to me a swim suit is a swim suit. I don't belive that one offers much quantifiable benefits over another. I think one exception is durability. The chorine fades the colors and the suit eventually gets almost translucent.
Are some brands noted for durability? Do tri shorts face the same issue? Are they more or less resistant to fading and degrading?
Well, I'm a newbie, so I chose a Speedo Endurance+ based on reviews that talked about longevity in chlorine.
My suit has been used for 2 months now in the pool 2x/week, and it looks as good as new. I highly recommended it to a buddy who is started his tri training, too.
I strongly recommend against using any triathlon or bike shorts for pool swimming. Go with polyester suits and you should be fine. I've used TYR and Speedo brand, each for many months (six +) and they've each done well over time. I also trade out a couple suits per week (kind of like with my shoes) which also helps longevity.

+1 on the Speedo Endurance. These things last me 100,000 meters... an eternity in swimming. I went from 4 to 5 pairs a year to only 2.
