Subject: compression socks or calf sleeve?

I've been wanting to help the calves/shins along with compression socks or sleeves and I'm wondering which way to go. I think i'd rather the sleves as that's easy to clean then reuse, but only fi they don't slip a round a lot.

Also, any suggestions on brand that won't break the bank?

Swiftwick socks are GREAT - and inexpensive.

I'd go with socks, unless you're planning on using them solely for working out. Sleeves can cause issues with swelling in your feet if you wear them when inactive.

I started out with just socks because they cover feet too and I didn't want to buy both.  It really payed off when I started to get tendinitis in my Achilles, sleeves won't help that.  Now I have both though.  I wear the sleeves for long runs and the socks for recovery.  I love them.

I use Compressport calf sleeves. I actually have two pairs, one pair I use for running and the other for recovery. Use to use 2XU, but I like the Compressport because they are longer for my 6' 2" frame-long legs. I love the overall compression support of the sleeve and I can quickly rinse them out and hang them up to dry. Whereas the socks I would feel obligated to throw in the wash machine after every use.

Proper calve sleeves do *not* slip.  I run with them on my weekly 13 mile run, no issues.

On occasion I also wear them after a run for up to 8 hours.  I don't get swollen feet, but I suppose that could be an individual response.

I also have the Compressport sleeves. Very happy with them-- no slippage or swollen feet. I got them on Amazon for around $35.

My feet are fairly particular about socks, so I stick with calf sleeves.

Socks for some training. Sleeves for races. Neither move around, but I want bare feet for transitions.

I train in the same socks I race in.  The shoe fit and padding is the same.  Then on race day I add the compression sleeves.  I get the benefits of compression without changing shoe fit.  Compression socks tend to be very thin and not as absorbant as my favorite running socks.

I wear 2XU sleeves. I find sleeves to be much easier to get on. Plus if you race in a wetsuit you can already have the sleeves on, obviously you couldn't do that with a sock. Also IMO, sock material and compression material are two different things and should be separate

I only wear the socks - never while running, only for recovery.  If I run late at night, I will wear them to bed. Love the way my legs feel the next day.

I went to my local drug store and bought medical compression socks.  $17.95 per pair.  They don't have the cool Nike swoosh and they are not fluorescent yellow, but I haven't been able to find any research that says the swoosh or color help in any way, so I'll stick with my solid black, old man, medical compression socks.

Thanks for all the feedback. The point on transitions/wetsuit is a good one. Sleeve's it is! Thanks!
