Subject: Anyone running St. Patrick's Day Tri?

I am running the St. Patty's Day Tri in Keller in March. I have read some race reports and realize the weather is seldom perfect for this race, but was eager to get the season started. My kids (4 and 6) will do the kids' tri the day before. Anyone else doing this? Any experience with these races? Either way, I am excited to get the season rolling.

I generally bow out of this one because the weather can be so unpredictable.  I have done it in 80 degrees and 30 degrees.  Let me tell you that 30 degrees is just not fun.

Since I live less than a mile from transition, I may wait until the week of and if the weather is looking good, and it is not sold out, I may sign up.

Signed up for it.

Want to get a good comparison of my winter training versus the monster tri I did in October.

Monster Tri was pretty cold, hope we will not see sub40 temps.

But if we do, I might consider a longer transition for warm clothes.

I have done this tri each of the last 5 years but probably will no be doing it this year. It's almost always cold and rainny. In fact I only remember 1 of the 5 years where i just simply didn't freeze on the bike. The main reason i won't do it this year is cause last year on the day of due to rain and cold weather they cut the bike down to 6 miles which really bumed me out. It's always pretty competitive and DA normally puts on really good races so if you don't mind the bad weather its worth doing as a season starter.

This is a rough one to start the season. A pool swim that can take an hour to get everyone through, followed by a very boring double bike loop. Add in nasty weather (ditto to the previous comment about the lame bike last year due to freezing rainy temps) and an incredibly competitive field, and an evil propensity to schedule on daylight savings time, and this is one to pass on. Tri season should start in April

I am still on the fence myself. I raced this last year and was bummed over the shortened course but I can see the reason behind it. DA always puts on a good show and if you are a slower swimmer you will be sitting in the back waiting for your swim but you get that with every race that has an indoor swim. If the weather is decent I will be racing this one to open the season.

My whole family is signed up (me, wife, 6 y/o, 4 y/o). I know the weather may be iffy, but I am impatient and am ready to kick the season off! I'm excited to race.

I'm going to race this as sort of a status check prior to my first A race of the season at Kemah in late April. I did the monster at the end of October and enjoyed it despite the cold temps. The key to getting through the pool line is to be able to swim the 300 faster than 6 min. Lots of people say around 6 is their expected finish meaning the wait time for 5:50 vs 6:10 is pretty dramatic.

this will be my 1st tri !  both nervous and excited. Pretty slow swimmer, so I'll be in the back, how long will I be waiting ?

any advice is appreciated ! Hopefully the 4y/o & 6y/o won't beat me too bad !!

You might wait up to one hour.

But since this means it will be warmer outside, it is not the worst of things, as you get to wait inside.

Welp, race week and of course it looks like rain. The chances have gone down a bit in the last few days, so hopefully as it gets closer the weather will cooperate more (I hate to hope it DOESN'T rain in Texas though). Either way, I'm excited to race!

The closer Sunday gets, the colder the weather is projected. I'm seriously going to have to consider layering while in transition.

This is definitely socks, gloves, long sleeve bike jersey, and thigh high leg sleeve sort of weather. Add to it that it could be raining and I'm thinking 3:00 T1 is inevitable. Better that than freezing the entire ride though. With a wet bike course, no one will be setting PRs in any case.

As long as we don't have to cut the bike course short.

Looks like marginal improvement on the weather front. Likely a wet course but maybe not continuous rain. Keep your fingers crossed for the full 2 laps on the bike.

Overall I think it was a pretty good race. The wind on that back part of the bike was pretty brutal, but otherwise I had a blast this morning.
