Can anyone give me the lowdown on winter running at Kensington, Island Lake and Hines Drive?  Coop said they've been plowing at Kensington- is that all of the 8 mile loop?  Are there any bathrooms out there? If I go to Hines- are there any bathrooms open?  Do they clear the path there or just run on the shoulder?

Thanks.  I'm running long runs on Wednesdays/mid-long runs on Sundays thru Ogden Marathon on May 19th.

I was at Hines Drive not this past weekend but the one before, and it was only plowed from Michigan Ave. to the end of the campus property. It wasn't THAT bad, I did it without yack tracks or whatever they are, and just had to slow down a little. But I don't think they plow it at all, which surprised me. I did see a couple of runners (and even two cyclists!) on the shoulder where it was plowed. And I don't believe any of the bathrooms are open.

Kensington plows 4.5 miles from the main parking lot near Kent Lake Rd so its easy for a nice out and back.  I ran on the paint creek trail on Saturday- it was snow covered but very manageable with just trail shoes.

Kensington is our choice for long runs in the winter.  They do a terrific job of plowing the path and you can easily hit 10 miles or more there

Thanks peeps!  Any chance any potty facilities open at Kensington?  I like Hines because I can get many more miles in without laps but I'll take no snow over that so I'll probably switch it up depending on the amount of snow we have.  Looks like it will be Kensington this Wednesday (9 miles).  So, I get off at Kent Lake, take a right into the park and then the first parking lot- the one with the water park?  Which way does the plowed section go?  Towards the highway or away?  Thanks.

First parking lot is actually the east boat launch, JUST past the booths.  This is a typical starting point for many runners and I believe the mile markers start there.  Park and head away from the bathroom (which is open and heated) into the woods (away from the highway).  The first bathroom is a hard right turn (there's a fork in the road) about 2.5 miles in...this is also open and heated.  There may be other bathrooms further along the way, but for sure there is one open at Baywoods lot, where the plowing generally ends.

Sushi, When I run/ride Hines I am coming from Southfield hwy, and Ford road...I have to travel about 2 mile to get to the one spot I know a potty is open.  In summer I hit the first parking lot from Ford Rd, but I always need to use the facilites after my drive and change out of sweaty stuff for the ride home.

I do that at the Starbucks on Michigan Ave. and 94, where I conveniently often get myself a "long run latte." =)

Let me know when you will hit up Kennsington for those mid-long runs.  I have on tap ~ 7-8 mile runs on Sundays through April - when I will be extending them out a little to 10 miles before Martian.

I do a prescribed workout, but it is fun!  In a sick hard work sort of way.  ;-)
