Swim
Comments: Great swim really, tired to draft lead swimmer, but he was too fast. So a no drafting swim. Traffic wasn't bad until second half of 2nd lap, a little weaving and dodging. Exit from water to transition was very tiring, out of breath, thought 'how am I ever going to cycle now?', very long run to transition in wetsuit. What would you do differently?: Nothing, the swim was close to perfect really, good position from the beach, almost no pushing, a fast sprint to begin kept me away from traffic. Transition 1
Comments: Haven't tried running without shoes, luckily the carpet made running in shoes possible. Jumping onto the bike is pretty hard in shoes, took a few goes to get into the pedals, but not sure if shoes on the pedals would be that much faster. What would you do differently?: As the pro's have shoes already in the pedals, I would benefit learning how to do this for Olympic distance, top men in my age group beat me by 25 seconds or so in transitions, probably because of this small trick. Everything else was good Bike
Comments: Amazing first lap. First swimmer out of water got a flat out of transition, I was the leader, a police car lead me for the first lap! With a motor cycle crew filming. After first lap, many bikes on the course, a little hairy on the turns and down hills trying to get past people, almost got crunched on a climb by trying to go though the middle of two cyclists who decided to merge! Some nasty crashes. No drafting, but a fair few people were drafting me. What would you do differently?: Nothing, it was a great cycle. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty good transition, second fastest in age group. Didn't jump off the bike, stopped. Shoes got caught in the carpet, bike was jumping in the air, ended up carrying it on my shoulder. Helmet off and running shoes on was excellent, no problems like previous events. What would you do differently?: Aside from the bike shoes getting caught in the carpet, little. It was a good transition. Run
Comments: Coming out of transition I was thinking 'I'm going to get overtaken pretty quickly', legs felt heavy and I felt pretty exhausted, just tried to go as hard as I could for as long as I could. Had a mountain biking race offical leading me on the first lap, which helped me keep my pace. Just kept going, feet started to really hurt on final lap, running without socks gave me about 7 hotspots and blisters, lots of blood at the end of the race. What would you do differently?: Not much, could go slower on the bike, but then I could get overtaken. Post race
Warm down: Walked along the beach, stood in water for 10 minutes. Some stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Shoulder and tricep strength for swim, still have sore muscles from wetsuit. Bike and run, could do squats and quad extensions, this may prevent sore legs on run? Speed work in training. training without socks Event comments: Feel as though I finally got it together, last two races have been learning experiences, this race was a great way to finish off short course races for the season. Had a great trip over to Sokcho with some very good friends, this race and the events around it were pretty special. Last updated: 2004-06-29 12:00 AM
