Run
Comments: The first few miles felt easy, but it definitely felt like we had a tailwind. Still, I felt good and didn't think I was going too hard to finish strong. Around mile 5, my hips started hurting a bit. After the turnaround it felt like we had a headwind the entire run back to the finish. After the halfway point I also really started to feel the fatigue in my quads and calves... at that point I wished I had run a few more MPW over the last two months. I eventually hooked up with another runner on the way back and without talking about it we both took a few "pulls" in the headwind while the other drafted. He looked like he could be in my age group, so I tried to time it so I could draft off him until about .5 mile from the finish. That plan worked well, and I surged out of the draft with .5 mile left, just as we hit an uphill. I managed to get a gap, which I maintained to the finish. What would you do differently?: Run more. Possibly do some intervals or tempo runs at race pace, but definitely run more. Post race
Warm down: Stood around at the finish, stretched out, then realized how cold it was. Shivered as I jogged back to the car to get some warm clothes on. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough base for the distance. Last updated: 2013-02-14 12:00 AM

Going into this race my realistic goal was to either match or slightly improve upon the same race a year ago. This was due to the fact that I focused on running in the months leading up to the 2012 race and this year I have been focusing on cycling. I ran 40 or more miles per week preparing for 2012, and ran 30 or less miles per week this year. I suspected that my aerobic fitness would be there, but my legs might not have the durability and endurance they needed for a 13 mile race.
Ran a mile at an easy pace.
