Hamilton Township, New Jersey

CGI Racing
85F / 29C
Total Time = 1h 05m 30s
Overall Rank = 113/1176
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/72
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 am, coffee, toast and orange and out the door
Event warmup:

ran a little in slides, a mistake considering the blisters later, swam about 100m - great that they let you warm up in water
Swim
  • 11m 37s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

Seemed a little longer that 500m based on times, A little better swim, 50-54 went in a wave with 30-35 so about 125 total in wave, tried to hang back at start but caught the pack and started to swim over some, broke momentum and concentration, much more comfortable in lake swim, gave up 2 min. to FOP so need to keep working on OWS
What would you do differently?:

find an open lane early on, stay on pace
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

didn't seem that long but was a run up the hill, pretty good transition,
Bike
  • 26m 48s
  • 10 miles
  • 22.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Thought I was cruising on the bike, passing a lot and then disappointed with the result, usually my strongest leg but at average of 23 mph was still only 8th in AG, obviously needed to pick up pace
What would you do differently?:

go stronger on the bike, set expectation that sub 28 min. would be a good time, was not aggressive enough for such a short, fast course
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

lost site of the run out and went towards bike out, need to concentrate
Run
  • 23m 9s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 41s  min/km
Comments:

did not realize the timing mat for run which was very close to end of transition so kind of jogged the first 100 yards or so thinking I was still in transition, picked up pace but was looking for a 22 min 5k, pretty good run, need to stop saving it for the finish
What would you do differently?:

push harder though out run - need to be pacing as 7:15 per mile, was closer to 7:30
Post race
Event comments:

A big event with over 1,200 in the sprint, great level of competition, really well organized and on time, liked the swim course, needs a longer bike course - 10 miles is too short for this type of race since it is so flat, seemed to take forever to get timing results and even then they had some issues, overall a great event

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
