Signed up for New Orleans 2014. I haven't been to NOLA before, so no knowledge of the race venue and town. I booked a room at the host hotel, Hilton Riverside. For those of you who are familiar with this race, is the hotel close to the venue? Do I need to rent a car? If the hotel isn't near the start, are there shuttles from the hotel? Any suggestions for a better hotel location?

Sorry about all the questions, but appreciate any input!

The host hotel is nowhere near the swim start.  Probably 10-12 miles away.

I'd read last year's athlete guide as reference to the logistics of it all: http://ironmanneworleans.com/athletes/athlete-guide/

I did the race last year, and also stayed in the Hilton. It was a nice race and the swim is in a protected area now. I drove over from AL with a friend so we had a vehicle. I would recommend a rental vehicle so you can get from the hotel to the race expo and swim start. Also, after the race you'll need to get from the finish back to the hotel. I don't know that there would be a better hotel cause the swim start and run finish are pretty far from each other.

If I recall, they did have shuttles to the race start at the Marina from the host hotel this year (2013). They also had shuttles from the finish back to the transition area at the Marina (which is about 10-12 miles away).

But, that being said, I had my vehicle there and the wife drove it around and back to the finish after the race.

Thanks everyone! I booked a room at the Hilton, looks like I will rent a car.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?
