Hi everyone!

I'm a one-time lurker; now a member I'm predominantly a runner but my lack of cross-training resulted in injuries so I thought triathlon would be a good way to force me to still train for a race and also cross-train. I've officially signed up for the IM 70.3 Syracuse next June, so if anyone else is going or has any tips for a first time IM 70.3 athlete, let me know! I could use all the help I can get.

Cheers,
Anne

First tip... no headphones in races.

I've also signed up for my first 70.3 race next June in Lubbock, Texas. If you've never done a shorter distance tri (sprint/olympic) and don't have much background outside of running I'd start slow with biking and swimming. Work up a base and then go from there. Use the training plans on this website. I'm starting week 3 of a couch to sprint plan right now, then I have back to back "bridge" programs from sprint to olympic and then olympic to 70.3 that end on my race weekend (June 29, 2014).

For most people, there is a story in how they came to the sport as beginners. Some of the most inspiring of those beginner tales begin with health scares.

Without paying a personal trainer or a PT on a regular basis, is there a regimen of exercises I can do to strengthen all around?

Is there any current literature or recommendations on this subject, and when do you know it's time to stop activities like running before the damage is done or worsened?

Yesterday I was a little sore, and today, whenever I bend over to pick something up, standing up again hurts badly. Have I done some sort of permanent damage? What can I do to rehab this area?

I don't really strength train (because I never have and don't really know much about it) and feel like my lack of upper body strength is the reason why I'm not getting faster.

My right foot is killing me (flat feet, wearing orthotics). I can no longer run on it and am forced to walk. After walking 10k, my foot felt like it was squeezed really hard.

I am 28 now, hardly an old crony, but life in busy Sydney Australia has meant my belly is softer than the excuses I use to convince myself I am in good shape.
