Subject: RE: Quinoa - Saponin ... anyone else have reaction? Yes, I have a history of GI distress associated with quinoa. Oddly, I ate it for several years with no issues. Then one day out of the blue, I had with a meal and got horrible sharp pains in the tummy for several hours. No naseau or vomiting, just a very bad churning in my stomach that felt like a stabbing pain. Like you, I experimented to make sure it was the quinoa. After I decided that was the culprit, I stopped eating it. I even had problems months later when I accidentally ate it in a 10 grain hot cereal without realizing. Sure enough, those same strange sharp tummy pains occurred, I looked more closely at the package and there was quinoa as one of the ten grains. That was about ten years ago and I've been too afraid to try it again. I hadn't heard of Saponin. I'm pretty sure I was thoroughly washing mine but it was ten years ago. Maybe if I'll get brave enough to try to again after being totally sure it's washed to see what happens. |
