Comments:

I made this so much harder on myself. My garmin clocked 2.26 miles. Everyone kept saying that you needed to swim left to compensate for the current. Well I ended up way too far left and had to swim along the sea wall for quite a bit. Still a fun time and the swim was way better than I had imagined but for me this was a horrible swim performance... its usually my strongest leg!
What would you do differently?:

Learn the course. I did no prep and I didn't even know what the swim exit looked like. I wasn't even sure what I was aiming for!
Transition 1
  • 12m 33s
Comments:

I went really slow. I already knew I was back of the pack based on my swim time so I just eased off.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 7s

Comments:

I was on a rental bike with a shifting system that was different from my own. This slowed me down a bit. In addition I'm a horrible down hill rider... I use the brakes way too much. I sitll really enjoyed the course and it was a fun experience... just not the best set up for a good performance.
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder on the climbs. I had it in me
Transition 2
  • 03m 21s
Run

  • 10m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I did zero prep for the race so I had no idea I was going to be running in soft sand. I also heard about a sand ladder but didn't have a clue what that was... found out race day :) That said it was a blast to do something different and while it was hard I really did enjoy it.

Event comments:

What a fun race. I kind of wish I had prepped more. I really could have done a ton better if I had a clue what I was doing. I might have to do this one again to see what I can really do.

In addition to writing your race number on each upper arm, they also wrote your age on your calf. This allowed me to see who was passing me by in the bike section of this race.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

I signed up for a Sprint in July, an Olympic distance in September, and the Alcatraz tri in October. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way.
