Freedom Springs Triathlon
74F / 23C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 38s
Overall Rank = 133/173
Age Group = 60-64
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Bagel with peanut butter and jelly and cup of coffee. Plain water on the way to race. Drive an hour to get there, but gain an hour crossing time zones. Pick up packet, set up transition and offer assistance to Michelle Butler, a new triathlete. Had two bites of Clif Bar and a Clif Shot Mocha gel about 20 minute before swim start.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 17m 39s
  • 650 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was 250 yards longer than advertised. I did not wear a wetsuit even though I brought them. I got leg cramps pretty bad and at one point thought my race was over. I was very disappointed in my swim time because I thought it was for 400 yards. I am so glad to find out that it was a long swim. Feel better with my time now. I did not let it affect the rest of my race though.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe more electrolytes. Still need more swimming. Drafting is working and navigation is exceptional for me. Goggles still fog. Have tried leaving water in them and spitting in them. Will try the baby shampoo next.
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

What would you do differently?:

It was a long way from water to transition. Maybe run a little faster.
Bike
  • 37m 44s
  • 10 miles
  • 15.90 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a great pace for me on a road bike. Didn't look at my pace during the ride. Just rode by feel.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much in the race. Do more intervals in training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/534431747
What would you do differently?:

Move faster, dump and go.
Run
  • 30m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

This was an outstanding run for me given my current fitness level and little amount of run training I've been doing.
What would you do differently?:

Speedwork
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Went back in cold springs for legs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Age and training.

Event comments:

Non-USAT race. Very small and local. No food afterwards, other than fruit. Would have preferred food, even it I had to pay extra for it. No activities to speak of. Again, small local race, so that's okay. Volunteers were great.

I loved the COLD water and all the plants and grass I swam through! I thought the swim was longer also. How did you determine it
was 650 yards?

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
