In my foot......borderline between stress fracture and stress reaction. Dx with x-ray and MRI.   Any experiences out there with this?  Treatment options?  Time off the foot?  REturn to training?

Not training as an ortho...but I think it's the difference between a fracture and an area of bone that is remodelling itself not necessarily due to a fracture but repetitive stressors in an abnormal way which can cause pain similar to if there had been a fracture. Radio graphically on XR not sure what the difference is but I assume bone scan/MRI would be able to tell. It's likely you had a stress fracture that is healing and that's why it's coming back as in between? Usually for any fracture you are looking at 4-6weeks before healed--longer if putting more stressors on it. Who ordered the XR/MR? That's who should be able to give you more clarity...

If a doc took an x-ray and MRI, what did they say?

I think I might have a stress fracture. I'm not sure that I want to spend the money on an MRI if the result is simply to rest as the treatment sounds the same with more money in my pocket.

Besides the obvious rest and strengthening/PT around the ankles, what can I do to further find the root cause and correct it? Also, what are doctors’ stances on active release?

Is there anything that I can do to lessen the chances of stress fractures. I have had no luck with the doctors I have seen. Some have advised orthotics, some say there is nothing that can be done.
