Subject: Mentor program options?
Will there be more mentor group options available once the new year begins? None of the current groups quite fit me. I am 35 next month and totally new to this. I need to focus on cycling once I buy/ borrow a bike, but want to take this journey very slowly at first. I would much rather consistently hit my workout goals fairly easily as things get gradually more challenging over time, than to struggle unreasonably to keep up with a plan that is too taxing for me from the start. I am in this for the long haul, no need to rush. The Tri Turtles would have been a great fit for me but alas, the group has disbanded (?).

More about me: Special Education teacher with more free time than most, but still often pulled in many directions. Will need to maintain good focus and consistency to stick to a workout plan. I am a bit frustrated that my chosen tri plan is not actually free as advertised here. I will need to purchase the Bronze plan to get it. Still deciding if I want to pay for it yet, and where the money is going to come from.

Overall in very good health, mild asthma and ovarian issues that require a fairly simple fix and some occasional pain medication. I see the doctor next month to get a referral to a specialist (which may take a while), but we know what is going on and I am honestly OK to begin a tri workout plan. I just have to listen to my body and adjust as needed on "pain days".

I have a history of mild(er) bulimia and severe anorexia. I was hospitalized twice for anorexia in my early 20's. I am proud to say my former obsession with my weight and shape is only a bad and distant memory, and I joke that I would love to be 200 pounds of pure muscle, haha. That being said, I do have some "triggers"- wearing jeans (I obsess about the size), getting weighed (I refuse even at the hospital- I give an honest and probably fairly accurate estimate, but the idea of seeing the exact number is very hard for me), and logging what I eat (I tend to slip into old habits and try to "diet"/ restrict rather than simply log my choices and calories). So needless to say, I won't be logging my nutritional intake on this site any time soon (I would have to pay to do that anyway, *sigh*). I do make pretty good food choices most of the time, and after beginning this journey (12/27/14) my eating has been quite wise naturally- I honestly craved that banana, Clif bar and huge bottle of water. After the anorexia I tend to overeat a bit. My body weight is within the normal range, a bit on the higher end but nothing to worry about. But I will need reminders of that as I build muscle and start to look a little different. I really want to focus on what my body can *do*, rather than how it looks.

Thanks for any input and I apologize if this thread is posted in the wrong place. It didn't seem suited for the official mentor/ mentee section, or anywhere else either. Like I said, I'm totally new! Enjoying the site and supportive content I have been reading so far...

Hi! Welcome to BT and triathlon. Great personal story and here's to health instead of numbers!

There are other mentor groups that will be open soon. There can also be a bit of a lull here on BT during holiday times (including weekends ) Some of the groups are still active/open in the Mentor Program Archives section--it's worth a look.

For what it's worth, I think the memberships here are pretty much the best value for training plans you'll find.

Waverly, there will indeed be more options going forward, but I wanted to invite you to join Baowolf's group. We are diverse in terms of training goals and such. Steve, our mentor, is great at helping with crafting training plans and other input. He (and most of the group in past years) are also pretty budget conscious, and good at finding ways to do things on the cheap. Whether your goal is a sprint triathlon, a 5K or an ironman, there is a place for you there. Like you, I'm more about the journey. But it is good for me to be around others who have different goals and aspirations. They remind me of what is possible and I enjoy cheering them on even if I choose a different path. It is a very family oriented group, with a lot of understanding that training goals have to be balanced with life. If that fits what you are looking for, jump right in. If not, no worries, keep looking until you find a group that you want to be part of.
