Terrible - It's very scary. I love cycling and try to be cautious but a lot of it is out of the cyclists control.

What a sad and tragic story. Public servants out lending a hand, trying to help even more than they already do, and this happens. Wow, I just shake my head. I'm sure the cause is still under investigation, the article provided little detail about what might have lead to the crash. Just horrible, regardless.

Thoughts and prayers to the affected families and friends.

Yeah, this picture (from the NYT) was on the front page of a section of the Columbus Dispatch this morning. Just awful.

it's awful, and it's happening every day.

Just last night in St.Louis a local Schriener pulled over on the side of a highway to help a woman who had accidentally run her van off the road.  No sooner had he put his emergency flashers on, when he was hit at full speed from behind.  Fatal accident. 100% preventable.

I wonder what effect it would have on these tragic numbers if cigarettes and cell phones were illegal while driving.  And my thought is if you are caught with both at the same time (like a million teenage girls i see around here), say bye-bye to your license, and hello to your new form of transportation: A BIKE!

Everybody be careful out there! Motorists ARE NOT looking out for us.

yeah my friend came within 1 foot of being one. It was the scariest thing I saw. People wonder why biking is my least favorite part of the triathlon. Nothing like hearing tires strech, smoke of burnt rubber because someone singaled and turning lef tin front of them and they still tried to go around them on the left. If thjey would ahve gone to the right everyone would been alot happier except for me maybe because I was coming up on the right.

That is horrible!

Shortly after noon, a small truck carrying freight was driving south on Indiana 63, about two miles south of Interstate 74 when it came upon the van trailing the group of cyclists. Apparently mistaking the slow speed of the van, the truck’s driver slammed into the back of the van, “shoving the van into the bicyclists,” Sergeant Watts said.

What a freaking IDIOT!!!! This was a really stupid and sensless wreck that affected way too many good people it seems.

I commute to work approximately 20 minutes each way and have discovered that when I get home I'm often in a bad mood. I'll leave work feeling great and ready to see Steph and Bunker but by the time I hit the door, I'm just mad.

I realized its because of the drive home. I truly believe that (1) people want everything to happen right now/exactly when they want it to happen and (2) they are selfish and (3) have no understanding. These beliefs become attempted reality when they get behind the wheel of a car.

I'm know I'm not a perfect person. I have my moments but the other drivers just make me nuts. We all want to get where we're going and we all will. Just relax, get off your frickin' cell phone, turn up the radio and enjoy the ride. Lane hopping and speeding up only to slow down to get one car ahead of me really doesn't accomplish anything.

Accidents involving cyclists are highly preventable [as with most accidents] and I believe are a result of people lacking the above listed traits.

My suggestion is that to receive a drivers license, you must first spend six months on a bike.

Okay, my rant is over.

I will admit being a running and now I biker I have changed my views and how I act towards such people. being in someone else shoes you have a better understanding of what is going on and what its like to be that person.

I will admit that bikers are not completely innocent and do some crazy things. Like biking in the on coming lane because there normal lane is all backed up. Then again when its rush hour with bumper to bumper traffic on a busy street I have no idea why someone would train on it at that time. I understand for people who commute to work and can not be avoided but common sense should also tell you that certain streets should be avoided if possible at certain times. I know its not always possible but it does bother me when I see a biker on a narrow 2 lane road during rush hour when both lanes are packed with traffic. I am more worried about the bikers safety. I know I am worried I am going to hit one of them one of these days.

This case is really sad since they took all the precautions to avoid problems and some idiot who was not paying attention really hurt alot of people beyond just killing those people.

I am lucky enough to get to work with the Concerns of Police Survivors organization once a year. I work with the children of fallen officers at the COPS kids camp. The Concerns for Police Survivors Organization is who these men were riding for. They were heros, supporting family members of other heros. Please visit the link for the official statement about this horrible accident and be careful when you ride! http://www.nationalcops.org

what a shame...

I'd like to think we can change drivers out there, but it will most likely only get worse.  We just need more bike/run/pedestrian friendly places to utilize.  One of the biggest things I miss about Cleveland is the MetroPark system.  They have a paved trail that nearly rings the city throughout the suburbs (no... not in the lake).  It was a great place to run, walk, hike, bike, rollerblade, etc....

Charlotte is trying with greenways, but its a ways off and won't be as nice of a loop.
