I have a friend who is training for a run but gets a sore achilles - would people recommend that he uses a cold spray or ralgex (some kind of heat treatment)?

He should use ice. Ice helps reduce any swelling. If it is a continuous problem, he should be doing lots of proper stretching as well (as we all should but it is always easier to give this advice than to actually heed it!). If he is new to running, he may also want to make sure he has the proper shoes. The cause may be that he is over-pronating and a different shoe may help solve the problem. Too much hill training or speed work may also be part of the problem so he may want to take it eay on those for a while to give the injury an opportunity to heal.
