United Way of Huntington County
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 05m 49s
Overall Rank = 3/43
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition and get race bib and ankle chip
Event warmup:

No warm up
Swim
  • 07m 53s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt uncomfortable the whole race because my right eye goggle started to leak immediately, so I had to stop a couple times at the turn to let water out of it. Never resealed, so was a nuisance.
What would you do differently?:

Do a practice lap with Google on to make sure it sealed well. I went below water, but leak didn't show up until I started swimming. So a warm up lap might have been better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Struggled to get helmet on with glasses. Glasses kept falling out. Cost me about 10-20 seconds of fiddling.
What would you do differently?:

Put on helmet first, then slide glasses in
Bike
  • 33m 54s
  • 13 miles
  • 23.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Not my best ride this year. Didn't realize I was in 39 gear until about 2-3 miles into ride. Couldn't understand why speed wasn't where it should be until I looked down and saw the problem. Missed opportunity to be faster in that stretch with some down wind. Rest of race was side wind and head wind, stiff but not terrible. My legs were also a bit tired still from Wednesday TT, so I had a hard time getting watts where I wanted them. Only 228 on watts. Rpm was at 84. Bike was shorter than advertised distance of 13 miles. Garmin had it at 12.32.
What would you do differently?:

Double check bike gears when setting up in transition
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Uneventful transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 22m 3s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 25s  min/km
Comments:

Good run for me. Pushed hard and steady. Course was longer than 5k. Had 3.23 on Garmin
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed water and walked around for 5-10 minutes. Knew I had a good race because felt like I wanted to get sick. After stomach settled down, did some light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. Goggles on swim, sun glasses in T1, and doing TT on Wednesday affected legs for bike. Bike gear set up in 39 ring was a miss too.

Event comments:

Nice race. Nice course. Pool is great with 8 lanes and wave swim in same lane vs snake swim is best way to do that. Bike course was great, but shorter than advertised by more than 1/2 a mile. Run, however, was longer than advertised and was challenging with some hills. Medals for all participants and winners. This race could draw more participants if it was USAT sanctioned.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
