Age Group Rank = 2/7
Pre-race routine:

Ate oatmeal for breakfast. Loaded bike on car and drove over bridge. Got race packet and set up bike.
Event warmup:

Short sprints in parking lot. We had a long walk to the swim start.
Swim
  • 16m 5s
  • 1167 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started off slow going out of the harbor. I was really surprised that it was fresh water since all my open water swims were in open water.
It is a little tricky to get around the sea wall and into the current of the Napa river. The current is trying to force you back into the harbor/into the wall. So make a wider turn than needed.
No Bouys, just follow the sea walls. The current is really strong. I swear i might was well just float and get the same time.

A kayak is there to make sure you get into the "new" harbor at the finish. Otherwise you may end up in the bay the current is so strong.
What would you do differently?:

I decided my old wet suit was not good for swimming Triathlons so I got a tri specific wet suit.
Transition 1
  • 04m 27s
Bike
  • 1h 12m 21s
  • 22.22 miles
  • 18.43 mile/hr
Comments:

It was overcast and cold so I wore a bike jacket.

Sonoma BLVD is rolling hills and a rough road. The trail over the bridge can be windy.
There is a real hill from the Dead Fish to the turn around. But you get to go down it.

I pushed really hard on the bike course and passed a lot of people. Unfortunately, they passed me back on the run.

What would you do differently?:

Same something for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Run
  • 51m 34s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

The scenery on the run south isn't very scenic. When you run back you are under trees and you are running by the old officer's houses.
What would you do differently?:

Different shoes. I tried to get 1 more run out of my long distance shoes and my feet were complaining the entire run. I think 5 people passed me on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Shoes

Event comments:

I liked this race because it was a small local race. It wasn't too crowded and everyone was laid back. I liked the bike ride over the bridge and up to the vista point. The swim was awesome since you get to swim with the current for over half of the race.

Because it was a small local race though, it didn't have an expo or anything post race.
