June 2018: Chad Latino is an Endurance Coach, former USAT Coaching Director and Free-Lance Sports Writer.

From Athena to Zeus northern Greece has your triathlon. It’s time for you to vacation on the Mediterranean and support a grassroots race, learn some history and enjoy the friendly hospitality of Katerini, Greece. While the large corporations have done a masterful job in organizing events, there is nothing like a locally supported and organically grown race lead by passionate race directors and volunteers to further inspire you. Consider racing Greek, consider racing Almira Races under the shadow of Mt. Olympus in northern Greece for family fun and a relaxing spirit.

All the Almira races are supported by the passion of locals and limited corporate sponsorship from the Katerini area 45 minutes south of Thessaloniki on the beautiful Mediterranean coast near the Katerini beach Paralia overlooking the Thermaikos Gulf. Triathletes swims under Posedian’s watchful eye and under warm and tranquil waters while the bike and run portion of Almira-Man races are flat and fast and always under the watchful eye of Zeus and the looming Mt. Olympus. If you are up for a far more challenging race with challenging climbing and single track dirt runs consider the Almira-X.

Race organizers, Iordanis Papadopoulos and Evangelos Skiliopidis, have created three different race weekends for you and your entire family to enjoy. AlmiraFast Sprint Distance and Almira Half are held on the same weekend in mid May, the full and very challenging Iron Distance Almira-X in September and finally the fun and short sprint series also in September. Inspired by his son to organize a local race, Mr. Papadopoulas, a former mountain bike guide and an incredible fit athlete himself, decided to begin a community of athletes and start organizing local races. To Mr. Papadopoulas and his business-minded partner Mr. Skiliopdis it’s not about making money but to increase the healthy lifestyle and welcome guests to a very special place in Greece.

To introduce people to the sport Mr. Papadopoulas created a very unique formula series, called the Super Sprint Series, comprised of three very short sprint triathlons which would take the average racer less than 30 minutes to complete (200m swim, 5K bike, 2K run). However this is done in three different rounds in under three hours with each round eliminating down to an eventually top 30 for the final sprint. Though the winner has averaged about 17 minutes, this race gives beginners an opportunity to try something new in a very short format and a controlled setting while providing more serious athletes an opportunity to hone their speed and quick transitions.

Beyond the well organized and supported races, the entire family will enjoy the other activities beyond the race course to include exploring Mt. Olympus, Dion archeological sites, waterfall excursions, and ample historical sites. Or you could simply relax on the beach. Meanwhile the food is fresh, healthy and tasty making for a guilt free active vacation.
