Big George Triathlon
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 4h 49m 43s
Overall Rank = 6/173
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/12
Pre-race routine:

Decided to try camping at the Battlegrounds site the night before. While it was nice to walk to the race, sleep was poor to say the least. Woke up to eat a bagel with PB and then laid back down until it was time to head over.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 33m 5s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was able to find a set of feet on the way out and rode them the whole way. Tried to go around a couple times, but once I was out of the draft I couldn't quite make the pass. Once the leaders from the next wave caught us I tried to hang with them for a little bit each time.
What would you do differently?:

Not my best time of the summer, but I think I was pretty much going to swim whatever the guy I drafted was going to swim. In a bigger race with more options, I may have come out faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Solid T1, except later on found of my goggles didn't stay in the sleeve! First time that's ever happened and I wasn't able to track them down!!
What would you do differently?:

Not lose my goggles
Bike
  • 2h 45m 30s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.30 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to practice goal IM pacing. I could not have done a better job. Goal TSS was 140, and I got 141. I'll take that! Felt great too.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Can't remember the last time I had a T2 over 1 minute that didn't include a lengthy run. I was in no hurry, took the time to put on socks and get ready to run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, not trying to blast through this one.
Run
  • 1h 28m 22s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

I wanted to start out at goal IM pace. It was honestly tough to hold back. I even gave myself a time-out to pee during mile 2. After about 5 miles of that, I felt really good and decided to have some fun and dropped to race pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and eventually got a massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I wasn't trying to crush this race, since it was more important to me that I practice goal IM pacing. It went really well and I felt great. VERY encouraging for Ironman in 4 weeks!

Event comments:

Love love love this race. I've done every one! And give me all that post race pizza and chocolate milk!

And to boot, I came in 2nd for the King George (combined Oly and Half for the weekend), super cool!!
