Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Webster on Saturday to pick up my race package. Met up with Ellen and Donna. We attended some seminars, bought some stuff and headed out the door to review the bike course. Ellen wanted to ride the course 12.5 miles, but with the humidity at 100%, I wanted to save myself for Sunday. I usually pack a dinner prior to a morning race, but we chanced it and ate out. All worked out. Went to bed at 9:30, slept occassionally, and woke up at four AM to get ready. Drove to the parking site and dropped off Donna with our stuff, we then parked the car about a mile away and rode in on our bikes. Ate yogurt and granola for breakfast.

Event warmup:

Swam out to the first buoy at 6:30. Stretched my calves because they were cramping.
Swim
  • 15m 52s
  • 900 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

This is the last time I start in the back of the pack. There were so many women doing the breaststroke and frog kick the water was like a washing machine, plus I couldn't get by anybody, because I would just run into another leg.
What would you do differently?:

Start in the front of the pack and have them swim over me, if they can catch me.
Transition 1
  • 05m 5s
Comments:

This was a very long transition area. It must have been 1/8 of a mile to the bikes and another 1/8 of a mile to the bike start.
What would you do differently?:

I have to buy a GU holder for my bike. Lost my GU right at the beginning, and had to take one prior to the run.
Bike
  • 45m 8s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 16.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Liked the biking. I'm getting more comfortable, just have to continue practicing my gear changing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Another long transition area, but not as long as the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I have to get used to using the quick tie laces. I probably would save another 45 seconds.
Run
  • 22m 18s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I guess you can tell that I'm a runner. Even though, I'm not sure if this course was correctly measured.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, stretched, drank my Endurox R4, and additional water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to improve on my open water swimming, and navigating. So I guess it's practice, practice, practice.

Event comments:

I enjoyed this race, but there were just too many people. I don't think I would do it again, but it was a good learning experience.

Great race Evelyn!  Too bad we didn't hook up.  I also have questions about the accuracy of the course distances.  While I"d like to think I did the run at a 7:02 mile pace, it probably didn't happen.  I also thought the swim course was short.  In the pool, I would do 100 yd "fast" intervals at 1:55 on a good day. According to the results, I did the 1/2 mile in 14 minutes -- something I never accomplished in a nice pool with a lane to myself!
