Subject: Difference between tri wetsuit and surfing wetsuit?
I have a wetsuit that I used to surf in, before I moved to Colorado, and my first open water tri is at the end of the month, I am a sissy about cold water, when I was younger, it was no problem, swimming in April in Maine? Sure! Now I like it warm, so I gotta wear something... anyway, my question is, does anyone know the differences between the two? It is fine for paddling, the arm movement is really easy, since you gotta paddle on the board, it is not too tough to get off and will keep me warm... but I saw a QR wetsuit at REI the other day and it was sooo slick, just looks faster...

congatulations on deciding to tri, but i must warn you, It can be darn addicting. he-he. A wetsuit
is genarrlly more bouyant than a surf suit. The material is thicker and is a different kind material
than a surfsuit, This will result in lower swim times generally.

It is a 4/3 mm suit, so it is pretty thick, tried diving in it once, but could not get enough weight to stay under, so it is pretty boyant. It is much more flexible than a diving suit, the knees and elbows are really flexy... I wish there was open water here to practice in so I coudl see how it feels now that I kinda know how to swim, and without a board...

4/3? You must have moved from No Cal.

I had the same question as I had a 3/2 from surfing in Cali. I think the paddling motion would be analogous to swimming. And the boyancy might help a bit. The water was warm enough in the Tri i did, so I didn't end up using my wetsuit. But I would have if it was below 64 degrees or so. I did see a guy with a spring suit at my triathlon though.

4/3 is thick though. If the water is anywhere near warm you'll roast I think.

Good luck.

Yeah, I lived in Monterey for a bit, numb hands and feet were not too much fun, but my body was warm... so maybe I will look at the QR suits...

And don't quit surfing. I live in Indiana now and go on a surf trip every year. Its about the only thing that I like better than Tri's.

I used to go when I had to go to Seal Beach on business every month, that was great, now I am in TX and NE, not the best places for surfing. So, my board is in Maine, I go ride some little waves when I go visit the family in the summer... When I surfed, that was the best shape I was ever in, fighting the breakers with a 10ft board is a great workout...
