Subject: Heart Rate question
I feel like an idiot asking this question but does anyone else have a problem getting their heart rate up to the "target rate?" I have been working out for years, cycling and one triathlon under my belt. When I am in the gym on a stationary bike or elliptical trainer or even the treadmill doing interval workouts my heart rate is between 114 and 128 or so and as soon as I START my cool down it is down to the mid-70s right away. (Even during my pregnancies I could only get it up to 140 or so.) I know the obvious answer is that I am not pushing myself hard enough. But I feel like there are times where I am pushing it but I am still at the botton of the target heart rate zone. Any thoughts? THANKS!

What is your max HR and if you are sure your monitor working correctly then maybe your max is lower than you think. Have you tried some flat out runs and measured your HR or considered V02 max testing? Two of my friends have HR's that aren't even close to guidelines - one way lower and one way higher.

their is a test to get your mhr for bike and run at HR1 and HR2  this will give you your true, discipline specific hr instead of those silly formulas that they try to apply to everyone based on your age.  just a thought.

What is your resting heart rate? If that is low, maybe your max heart rate is lower? Usually trained athletes have a lower than average resting heart rate and a slightly lower max heart rate. 114-128 bpm isn't bad for endurance training, maybe 128 is your aerobic threashold. Results are what matters, not what a heart rate monitor says. Just keep training and maybe as your fitness improves you'll be able to hold higher heart rates for longer. However, if your heart rate drops to mid 70s right away that is a sign of good recovery and good fitness. Maybe you need more of a challenge like training hills outside. That will usually get anyone's heart rate up no matter how fit they are.

Yeah, I'd say your max HR is lower than the formulas. I'm 38 so by 220-age my max should be 182, but by test my max is 193. And I have a friend that is 29 with a test max of about 175. I'd suggest doing the tests Ron recommended.

same here, do the test. When I did it my max HR was considerably higher than by formula. I've done the test a couple of extra times to be sure and every time, my max is higher than the formula. You may find yours to be lower, which is neither good or bad, its just your specific max HR.
