I, for one strongly believe where there is calm waters, reporters like to stir it but what is fact and what is partial fact in this story? Anyone with event organizing experience care to comment on the possiblities of this?

Hope there is more (positive), to this story he is not telling.

There's a whole One-O-One forum on that "other" site.  Here are some snips from the latest of the RD's posts on that site.  It includes contact info, for anyone who wants to follow up:

FYI, we have met numerous times with all the law enforcement agencies involved, and everyone is on the same page. We have also been over the course countless times with Bob's Barricades, who will be doing the coning/marking of the course.

As you can imagine, we will have officers/deputies at all intersections, and multiple law enforcement personnel at the major intersections along 64 & 41.

Remember also that we are talking about a Sunday AM race. I have driven the course on a Sunday morning, and believe me, it is very rider-friendly, especially on the more northern sections of 41, and east on 64 as you head to the turnaround at Grand Harbor Parkway.

Overall, the bike course should be fast, and it will be very safe. Also remember, we are not going to have 1,000+ bikes here in the first year. There will be plenty of room, and not too many worries with respect to potential drafting violations!

I sure hope the article has it wrong, that the reporter just interviewed the wrong people at the city or something.

Peace!

Everything about this organization up to this point has been first rate. (From what I have seen)

I personally find it very hard to believe that 3 weeks out they do not have all of the permits in place for the race. If the Post that CitySky dug up has any merit, I seriously doubt that a city would allow the RD to meet with on duty officers to go over course planning without the proper permits.

I find it much more likely that tha reporter talked to someone in city government that did not have a clue. That would suggest either a lack of proper followup on the story or worse.

I personally hope the story is bogus and that this race (And the rest of the series) is wildly successful

I've read good things about the races they put on in Ohio here on BT. I'm in for the 101 in The Woodlands.

I'm in Sarasota, next door to Bradenton.  Another article in the Sarasota paper this morning:

http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070418/NEWS/704180305/-1/xml

Seems to pretty much confirm what was in the first article that ran in the Bradenton paper a couple of days ago.  The organizers seem heavy on enthusiasm, but light on details.

I've been on the committee for the Sarasota Oly race on Siesta Key for the past two years.  The most challenging aspects of putting on our race have always been coordinating all the permits with the county and finding enough volunteers.

I haven't seen any local call for volunteers at this point, at least not through the local tri community.  Maybe they've got it covered - I hope so.

My personal opinion, but I have to wonder with the gulf beaches nearby, why anyone would want to swim in the Manatee river.

And the "rider friendly" course described in the first article, including parts of US41 and route 64 in Manatee county just sounds scary to me: not roads that come mind as cycling routes, unless you have a police escort and all traffic is blocked off.   Then, again, maybe that's how they're looking at it. But without the course finalized yet it seems unlikely that they've worked out many of the logistics with local law enforcement.

I hate to sound too negative, but it just doesn't look like a well-organized effort to me, especially so close to race day.

Mark
