Or, is it the same as a pool and it just depends.  It's a high school track if that helps?

I did some track work last week and I was told that it was a 400 meter track. This week I was on a different track (same school district) but I forgot to ask until after I was at home and logging my workout.

Unless it's old, it's most likely in meters.  If it's a cinder track, there's a chance.  If it's an all-weather type, then I'd say it's meters.

The standard tracks are 400M (or roughly 440yards), with 1 mile per 4 laps from the inside lane.

All tracks should be 400m(or 440yards if you like) unless it's a indoor track.

Just to clarify, 99% of tracks are 1/4 mile per lap.   This is 400 meters or 440 yards.  It is not like a pool where some are 25 yards and some are 25 meters.  The distance is the same, some just call it 440yards and other 400m.   To be totally accurate, 400m is 0.6% shorter than 440yards, but that would only make a difference if you were running more than 20 miles or so.    In a pool 25y is about 8% shorter than 25 meters, so it is a noticeable difference.  Not so with the running tracks.

What can throw you off is running on the outside lane vs the inside.  That difference can add up over a few mile workout.
