Pre-race routine:

Gatorade, detour bars, and water...team next to us was drinking beer already (6:30 am)...100k relay, and each team allowed one vehicle on course...15 legs, so 15 relay dropoffs...logistics nightmare, I have no idea how they do it, but they did a great job...took some 'before' pictures...good idea...beautiful morning, sang national anthem (9/11) to half mast...subdued, but not overdone...nice
Event warmup:

stretch...nervous laughter...2000 people fighting for porta potties
Run

  • 62 miles
  • 09m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

Next year will schedule the legs better (this year we scheduled based on difficulty of legs vs. strength of runners...two of us went back to back to back to back...not next time...need some time...and there aren't any GOOD legs, so it doesn't really matter)...just beat up after the day, but already planning next years race...incredible
What would you do differently?:

eat more...mostly took in gatorade and bars throughout the day and my last leg was weak (was it nutrition or the BOG we had to cross four times!!)...take in more solid food...its a long day
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza, beer, back to hotel to watch Canada vs. Czech Republic in hockey World Cup...relax...long shower with poison ivy soap...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training...nothing could have prepared me for this...except this...will train right in pinckney next year...only way to get a feel....definitely will do the pinckney half again in april...

Event comments:

Absolutely amazing...team effort, and beautiful day...everybody gets along...alot of fun...probably will go down as my favourite day of running ever...and hardest...

Performance: Good
actual time 13:00, but handicapped for gender and age of team
Course: Brutal!!!! About 30-40% on trails (dirt roads, rail trails, bicycle trails) with constant elevation changes, another 50-60% through walking paths (12" wide), with trees marked with ribbons to denote course, and about 10% through sh*t...I was waist high in mud about 8 times, and had to cross two rivers...one of the legs went THROUGH a lake!!! Hot day, so sweat and mud and dirt just stuck to you... Man, it was HEAVEN...an amazing day...everyone did three legs, and you had to create your own schedule and keep your own time...finish a leg, clean off, get in vehicle, go to next relay point, eat, (listen to UM lose to Notre Dame on radio!!)...get ready for next leg...everybody having fun..

Hey, Daryl! I particpate in a relay race like this each year as well. (Mine is 200m with 36 legs divided between 12 people). Sort of a weird type of race to participate in but fun!!

Congrats!!
