Hey guys, hows it going? I'm really new at tri's (i haven't even had my first race yet) and was wondering if any of you were located in the Athens area. I am a student at UGA and have been swimming at Ramsey on campus every day for the past 2 weeks. I cant start running yet because of a knee injury and doctors orders. I'll be buying a bike within the next 2 weeks, so I can start training on that soon too. So i anyone out there in Athens??? Or am I all alone......*sob*

No I'm not really crying, but it would be great to meet some people in person and train too. Let me know guys. Thanks!!

WATERGIRL lives in Athens.  You can find her blog here

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/index-weekly.asp?memberid=20351

She will surely know the best training spots in that area.

There are other tri people (on BT) in Athens? Good Lawdy, I don't believe it! I thought everybody was in Atlanta. No, seriously.

Daniel, there are great places to train around here, except don't expect to find any place flat to bike. I've heard hills build character, and there's nothing more fun than going downhill. Also, UGA has a very active tri team. I can't train when they're training usually because I have to go to work - bleh - but they seem to be nice. I'm debating joining up on their rides when they start back up in the fall.

Let me know if you have any questions, etc. Also, Sunshine Cycles downtown has a slow group ride on Mondays about 6 p.m. That may be something to check out. And don't you love the pools at Ramsey? They ROCK!

Y'all, if you ever want to get a ride together (that's not a mash-the-hills-going-23-mph type of ride), I'd like to join in.

Daniel, I have trouble sticking to a schedule, so some days I swim about 5 and other days it's at lunch and still other days I actually make it to the pool by 7:30. I have a silver swim cap, carry a pull buoy and kickboard, and go by the name "Stephanie."

There are a couple of non-BT triathletes that train at Ramsey right now. I saw a guy yesterday getting swim lessons from a coach - they were discussing his tri training schedule (yes, I eavesdrop) during a lunch swim.

watergirl, thats cool. i work till 12 on campus, so its kinda hard to get a lunch swim in some days, seeing as how the pool closes at 12 and back open at 5 (unless i'm mistaken). but we can try to set up a time in the future if that would be an option. i go by the name Daniel

about the bike ride, i finally got a road bike this past week!!! so i can finally start riding with people. any plans? let me know

Actually, the pools at Ramsey open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. They do a bit of shuffling during the day, so you might be swimming in the 50 meter and then get kicked to the rec pool. They want everybody to get some walking in too.

Yay for the road bike! What kind did you get? It's tradition around here to post pics of new bikes...

I don't live in Athens but I'm not that far away (Winder) so if you guys get a ride going, let me know! I might be able to make it but weekends are definitely better for me.

Saw Speedy the Turtle's post on a recent Georgia thread. If y'all are ever interested in getting a ride, etc. together in Athens, post it. I'd love to join in.

Sounds good to me. I can usually get one ride in during the week and one in on the weeend. I have met a couple of people on group rides who would be interested also. Wish we had a place close enough for an ows. Anyone know of any?

Ft. Yargo in Winder is only about 20 min. away. The lake seems pretty clean. I'm not sure if the buoys are there from the tri, but it's a pretty good swim. I think the course was 500 meters. Actually, you could do a mini tri in the park. And it's got good running/mtn. bike trails.

I train at Yargo all the time. My husband and I do OWS's there too. We have a guesstimate that at the beach, straight across - point to point, it's probably about 100 yards. I wouldn't advise venturing much further out past the swimming area because of boats.

What's your average speed? I'm planning a brick - heading out about 8:45 with a non-BT friend around Jefferson River Road area.

Allen, if you or anybody would like to tag, we'll be riding by Oconee Heights Baptist Church just off Hwy. 129 about 8:45. This will be Katy's second ride of this length (last minute prep for Ga Vets), so I'm hoping to average 15 or so mph. We're probably going to be a bit slower than you, unfortunately, because it would be awesome to ave. 17-19. If anybody's coming, post here, so I'll be looking for you. This will also be Katy's first brick, but she's faster than I am, so it should be fun to see what happens. Maybe I'll find speed.

That's great. We will just be happy to be riding. We had a cancellation so there will be two of us. I ride a red Giant and Trish rides a blue Trek (I think).

Thanks, Speedy!!! Unfortunately, Katy's going to have to postpone her first tri. She came down with strep throat Tuesday night, right after she registered for the race. I'm hoping she'll be able to defer to Double Bridges in Cumming... She was really looking forward to the race.
