I'm probably going to buy new running shoes tomorrow. Any advice on what to get for someone who supinates (rolls on outside edge of foot)? I've always had duck feet and supinate pretty badly on them, prone to sprained ankles, etc.

I'm hoping this will take care of the shin splints. I seem to consistently get the anterior kind, and I'm thinking it relates to the supination. The wear pattern on my sneaks: outer edge of tread worn away, while the inner edge is relatively fresh.

I can't afford right now to spend the several hundred $ for custom orthotics, has anyone dealt with this?

I feel your PAIN!! i have the same problem with my feet! So i went to the local running store and they hooked me up! I got a Pair of saucony 3d Grid Hurricane 5's, they were last years model so they gave them to me for a good price, $95. they are a support shoe and now when i run i am pain free! I LOVE THOSE SHOES! there were a pair of brooks that i tried on too that felt good, but these just fit my foot better. go when you have plenty of time to try on every shoe they have! i tried on about 20 pairs. But it is well worth the time! hope that helps! Jack. ;-)

Go to a good running shop where they know what they are doing. Also take a pair of your old shoes in so that they can advise you.
Really worth it!

I have the NB 1220's and I love them for their stability and roll control. They are intended to help the runner with a large frame (I'm 6'2" 244lbs). Others have posted good things about Brooks Beast also.

Good Luck,

Dan

Got a pair of Nike air max motos. The sales folk looked at my treadwear, etc, watched me walk, tried not to giggle, and reccomended 4 pairs. These were the most comfortable. Also, it turns out they have a thursday night running group that does runs from the store, and some of their customers are training for a first tri. So we exchanged emails and maybe I'll have someone to train with occasionally.

Tomorrow is my running day, so we'll see how the shoes work then. *crossing fingers*

excellent - hope they work out well - give them a chance to break in though!! Especially as it may feel completely different to your current shoes!

They feel completely different - better! I was still getting the splints, but not till farther along the run and not as bad. Much more comfortable than my old shoes, which were a bit narrow.

sounds like the purchase was successful. in case your interested (just an fyi-thing) i have a link to an on-line article on running shoes that is very, very comprehensive.

I would need to forward it to your email, so if i have your permission (and your interest) i'll send it along. (a friend sent it to me, when i was trying to figure out a similar issue)

What is it with the Thursday night running tradition?

There's a local group here, the valley forge striders, that have a couple of weekly runs. One of them is a thursday night run from the local running store. I notice that lot's of outdoor outing groups pick either tues, wed, or thurs nights for their activities. Maybe they don't like 'friends' or something.

I'll run with them one day, but when I asked what pace they kept, they said, "Oh real easy, like 7.5 or 8.5 minutes per mile". Can't sandbag me that easy!
