Pre-race routine:

Slept over at a friends house, allowing me to arrive disgustingly early. Selected my transition spot. Scoped out the lake and tried to stay warm.
Event warmup:

Shivered
Swim
  • 11m 37s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first Open Water swim. It was cold waiting for the start. I left my shirt on until the last moment. The water was about 1 degree warmer. My breathing started off horribly. I was gasping, and flailing. I managed to settle into 1 breath every 2 strokes. At about 100 yards I finally was able to get into my normal rythem of 1 breath every 4 strokes. Then it was just a matter of staying out of everyones way.
What would you do differently?:

Breathe at the beginning.
Transition 1

Comments:

I'm still pokey at transitions. I have to focus on getting in and out.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

It was drizzling and spprinkling the entire race. About a mile in, my glasses were completely obscured with rain. I was better off not wearing them. I wound up stuffing them in my bra *grin*. This was the first race for the new bike, and it was SWEET!! That is until the numbskull in the car who didn't know where she was going! I'm bombing down a hill (in the wet) probably making around 25mph. She pulls over into the lane I'm in, and I have MAYBE 1 foot of pavement left to me AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. I had a few choice expletives leave my lips as I took the bike into the grass so I wouldn't hit the car. *sigh* at least it gave me an adrenaline kick to get me up the next hill. Other than that, I passed a bunch of people which felt kinda nice.
What would you do differently?:

Keep my cadence up, especially on the hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

Bah...hottie boy was there folding his stuff as I was getting ready to go out on the run. Oh yeah, and the 8 year old boy who crossed the finish line as I was on my tush putting my running shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Run
  • 37m 26s
  • 3.1 miles

Comments:

Dave Scott was giving out encouragement at the run out. Found myself singing o/~We can do it. We can do it. We can help our Cindarelly. We can make her dress so pretty, theres nothing to it really. o/~ Settled into my pace *SLOW* and stuck with it. Made it all the way in.
What would you do differently?:

Run insted of schlep

Warm down:

Walk to the Beer stand

What limited your ability to perform faster:

big tushy

Event comments:

I didn't think it would matter to me at all that Dave Scott & Karen Smyers were associated with the race, but it actually did help me. There were so awesome at the Q&A nice, encouraging, informative and helpful! Before the guys got in the water, Dave reminded everyone to just breath for the open water swim. Thats what helped me not panic and get under control. Dave was there to cheer us on as we started the run, and now I get to say that I have raced with Karen Smyers. Like I said I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it turned into something I really enjoyed about the race.

Way to go on your first open water swim, a mass start no less! I was a little nervous going into it, but I don't think there was as many women as I expected so I didn't get banged around too much. Keep up the good work! Too bad we didn't get a chance to meet.
