I have read a bunch about PF and how to deal with it but I haven't heard much about continuing to train with it.  Should I or Shouldn't I?

Hi

I've been dealing with the same thing.  I posted this question out there and here's a link to the responses I got.  Some really great advice on how to keep training, but rest and heal the foot.

Best wishes -

I continued to train with it, but ensured that I did not run on consecutive days.

FWIW: I tried everything to get rid of PF. Ceasing to run wasn't exactly a cure, either. What I have noticed is that I've recently cut back on cycling and incorporated more calf raises and running into my routine, and for some reason my PF has disappeared. I have been pain free for several weeks now, and I'm elated to be able to run 7 miles without pain in the days afterward.

Strangely, my PF suddenly appeared about 6-8 weeks after I quit regular weight training in 2006, which included calf raises. When I told my PT about this, she said she wasn't surprised. Whatever the case, my experience has shown that there is some connection to the strength training of my calves and my PF woes.

Could you explain what a "calf raise" is?

I had a miserable year with PF. Eventually I went to a podoitrist. I remember the x-ray showing a hook like formation on the heal of my foot. He fit me for orthodics which I wear daily. No problem anymore. Anyway, I did and continue to do calf raises daily. What I do is stand with the ball of one foot on a step and lift up with your toes, drop the heal of the foot down towrads the floor and lift back up. You will need to balance yourself on a railing or wall. I do 1 or 2 sets of 10 on each foot. Not sure if this is what the other guy is referring to or not.
Also, when i did see the podiotrists (who is an ultra runner) he told be as long as I can deal with the pain...continue to run. He also showed me a great way to tape the foot...which helped alot! I would not be able to explain well on this posting but ypou might do a search for plantar facitus...I'm sure there are some good sites that have diagrams for taping the foot. Good luck...I know it's painful.
