Subject: swimming with road rash
I had a nasty crash this past sunday during a race and ended up with some road rash and a puncture wound. Wondering about when I can get back in the pool. I will be participating in my first triathlon in 3 weeks. I have been working hard on my swimming and running and am concerned about the impacts this injury will have on my swimming. I don't want to get in the pool too soon and risk infection or grossing other swimmers out but I do want to get going as son as I can. What to do?

while training for my first tri i ended up with 15 stitches in my leg. my first question was also 'what about my training?!" the er doc said swimming would be fine. there is chlorine in the pool, so there is little chance you will get an infection. that said, you might check with the pool you swim in. the one i go to has a rule about not swimming with open wounds. mine was sutured shut, so i was still able to swim.

OUCH! You may want to consider using some sort of waterproof bandage like Nexcare for the road rash that is visible, if possible.
