Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 and drove over. Still have a really bad cough but didn't take any medicine. Got there and they cancelled the swim and made it a 2.5k run instead.
Event warmup:

little jog.

Comments:

started okay and first mile was 8:19 but I had a tail strong tail wind. I was 5"23 out and 8:19 back. I don't think the time was adjusted for the chip start as my watch is 19 seconds faster than published.

Comments:

killer headwind out. I passed 87 on the way out and another 43 on the way back. I was strong for 4.5 miles out and then I struggled the last 2 miles into the headwind. Course is very conjested and impossible to marshall. I went over the center line 3 times to pass.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

didn't take off shoes as the course was hairy at the end.

Comments:

wow, i was worthless when i got off the bike. i had nothing. I hope my results were the result of my cough and cold but it was very disappointing. The run has been my most improved area this year and I just had nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

just stood around waiting for marcy to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had a bad cold for the past week and am not over it yet but I can't really explain what happened today. Very disappointing race for me.

Event comments:

Maybe my feeling on the race are a bit negative because of my poor performance but I have a couple complaints. The bike course was damaged by hurricane dennis in 2005 and they can't help that, but they continue to advertise the bike as 18 miles. $85 for a mini sprint is out of line and they should disclose the bike distance correctly. The other issue is that the bike course is not really safe for the number of people racing. I don't think they can fix that even if the road gets extended. The run course was also long.

That said, the post race party is great, plenty of beer and food, volunteers were awesome, they gave away a nice bike and they have nice prizes. Its a short drive and the locals are great, I wish they could find a way to improve the bike course.

Great job persevering through that nasty cold. I would have been tempted to blow it off -- good for you for going anyway!

You passed a lot of folks on the bike...sweet!

I hear you about much improved run times that don't come thru in tris...be patient I know they will.

I started counting folks I was passing at my HIM Sunday and thought of you...I can't keep it straight though like you do...all strung out so not many to catch...no one passed me though...other than second looper super fast guys.

Sounds like a fun close race that needs some tweaks.

It is hard to race when you have cold....glad you had fun with your tri buddies!

IF they hadn't cancelled the swim, would it be a wet suit legal race?  Just wondering if I should plan for a wetsuit this year?  I have signed up.  It will be my first ocean swim.  Are jelly fish an issue?
