  • Comments: Very hilly and tough course, but perfect weather. Finish line was a bit underwhelming. Few food options and difficult for spectators to watch the chute. Signs were mislabeled, leading to a decent bit of chaos.

  • Comments: I love the race, love the weather, love the crowd, HATE the finish area and how difficult it is for spectators. I am not sure what they can do to fix it, but it is not an easy race for spectators unfamiliar with the area to navigate and plan to be at.

  • Comments: 3399 out of 3712 (Men) It was really cool to run my first marathon with my wife. I'm not sure we'd imagined we'd ever do this. She was pretty emotional after finishing and I was incredibly proud of her!

  • Comments: I was a bit apprehensive going into the event. I had been nursing sore quads for the past month. I also had not done a training run longer than 16 miles, but I did log quite a few 13-15 mile runs. I also mixed in cross-training, as to not fatigue my quads, giving them a chance to heal up before the marathon. I also did a fair amount of rolling and icing every night for the 2 weeks leading up to the race. I thinks all of that helped me complete the run without any major issues. I did not set a finish time, I just wanted to finish. In fact, I was ready to jump into the half marathon course if I felt my quads acting up. Once I passed the Marathon/Half Marathon split, it was the point of no return!

  • Comments: The bands were fun and the support from volunteers and spectators was great, but the course was not very scenic for a destination race. The merge with the half-marathon course at mile 10 was poorly planned - the half-marathoners were at mile 5, so they were running at a much slower pace. The post-race scene was dismal, with runners and spectators packed into a trash-strewn parking lot with almost no shade.

  • Comments: I like the new course! I enjoyed seeing Balboa Park and Petco Park in the early part of the race. The real meat and potatoes of the race is flat. Fiesta Island is as mentally challenging as the flood channel of the old course. The sun came out on mile 12 for me and I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I had to run on the grass a few times on the Mission Bay sidewalk because that's where I felt strong and many were starting to fall off pace. I really had to suck it up the last 3 miles but only fell off pace by 30 seconds and still barely made it under 4 hours. I missed my PB by under a minute but I'm happy with it because of the heat. I'm happy with my modified training plan and I feel that my next marathon I can follow the same low mileage/higher intensity training. I'll be doing more swimming, biking and strength training to improve fitness and body composition.

  • Comments: This race was better than some of the other RnR's I've done. The bands, especially on the first half of the course, were much better than other races I've been at that advertise Bands (RnR, Austin). So, that was nice--but there were some "lonely" areas for the marathoners. I disliked merging back with the 1/2 marathoners cause it meant your faster marathoners merging with your much slower 1/2 marathoners--that was not so great considering only "cones" kept us apart (which mean marathoners stayed right, and 1/2 Marathoners went wherever they pleased.) Canted road sucks. They could've used a bit more post-race food and beverage options, and a better location than a giant parking lot. It used to end at a big field at the MCRD, much easier for taking a little recovery break on some grass vs. a nasty parking lot. But, still, an enjoyable race. Not sure if I'd race the full on it again, but maybe the half. I LOVE So-Cal weather and will be glad to live here. I hate Fiesta Island for running,

  • Comments: The bands were not as plentiful or as impressive as I expected. Some bands were good but they seemed really spread out and I hit several bands in between songs. More bands needed!

  • Comments: San Diego is absolutely beautiful, and if you haven't been, I'd heavily recommend it. The race was well supported, and the crowd really seemed to get into it. One thing that really made me laugh: There was an add for a mattress store on the Rock station that was encouraging the runners to have a comfy mattress to come home to after than run all 22.6 miles. Seriously, if you're going to try to advertise to runners, at least get the distance right. I've run 3/7 of the Elite races this year, and I'm registered for the other 4, so I'm well on my way to getting the RockStar and Super 6 medals! This will probably be my last marathon until San Antonio in Nov (or possibly Baltimore again in Oct), so I should have time to train well in order to meet my 3:30 goal by the fall. :-)

  • Comments: This marathon endeavor really started out as a “favor” to Jen. I know that running a marathon has always been a dream for her and it really wasn’t for me, I didn’t think I was built to run a marathon and the training really intimidated me beyond belief. Throughout the training and the race I began to see the draw towards the magical 26.2 distance. The training really presses you push your body to and beyond its limits and by the time you are ready the body is able to run for distances previously not thought of. Then during the race you are forced mentally push through obstacles and challenges that seem insurmountable, but by then end of the race Jen’s dream of running a marathon had been fully transferred onto me and I couldn’t have been more proud to have finished

  • Comments: I met Frank Shorter, Bart Yasso, and Dean Karnazes at the expo!! I had fun up 'till mile 13 or so, but the FE with the RW people, Tanya and Faeron was awesome!!! While waiting for my mom to come in, the announcer announced at aound the 5:30 range, that a elite woman was about to cross the finish line, and something went terribly wrong. My race was bad, but it was humbly, it could have been MUCH worse.

  • Comments: The race was really really well organized. There were lots of water stations and med stations, plus tables with salt packets, and the people giving out the orange slices. Tons of volunteers who were all great, most (if not all) of the water stations were themed. The bands and all the cheer groups were fun. Lot of spectators, people with hoses keeping you cool. I liked the gear check at the beginning, because I could wear a sweater in the morning and they drove it to the finish line so I could get my stuff at the end. Should have paid more attention to the rolling hills on the course map, but I just noticed the bigger hill near the beginning and wrote off the rest as flat (which it mostly was).

  • Comments: Had a free beer coming to me after the race, but the line was wayyyy long so decided to head out after a couple hours of walking around and resting in the grass in the sun and get some margaritas. So many people there...I don't know how families ever found their racers! Super fun race and would do it again in a heartbeat. Hope I can get this chip issue resolved quickly!

  • Comments: The post-race concert with Seal was great! They gave awards to the winners (almost all from Kenya). Shane Alexander was the warm up act. He was okay. Seal was really really good. I don't know a lot of his music really well, but his voice is so beautiful that you don't NEED to know it to really enjoy his music. All in all a good race. I wouldn't say one of my best, but definitely one of the more fun races. I'd love to do it again if it weren't so far away. Alas! Perhaps the Arizona RnR in January 2009.
