  • Comments: "Why do we do this? Why do we sign ourselves up for these races that are purposely more challenging than we think we may be able to accomplish?" Both questions that I asked myself a lot after going up to St. George in March and being defeated. Crossing that finish line and reflecting on the experience as a whole is why. We forced ourselves out of our comfort zones during training and during the race, in that we learn more about ourselves. All those experiences when put as a whole are the reason for pushing oneself beyond the limit of comfort because reflecting back now I can say the reward is greater than the risk.

  • Comments: I was continually impressed by how good I felt through out the day. Someone had told me that there would be great moments and awful moments, but that both would pass. This simple idea became my mantra and I really tried to not get caught up in any of the moments. The day was wonderful and I learned a lot. The volunteers were incredible and really made the race... If your reading this in the future because you have signed up to do or are thinking of signing up to do this race or another IM race, do IT! The race was hard, the water was chilly, the wind blew, the run was brutal...... but there's a reason your thinking about an Ironman, and I'm sure it's not because it sounds like it would be easy... • Comments: This was one of the most unique races I have been in, as the surrounding landscape is one of the most scenic places I have ever been. Much of it reminds me of the Big Island, with substantial lava fields. The event was wonderfully run. We were extremely lucky with the weather, as the usual high is around 88 degrees, whereas we topped out just over 70 on race day. Ironman #7 was a huge success. My overall finish in this race was my highest placing ever in an Ironman event

  • Comments: I talked to all the other guys on the podium in my AG and they all said this course is tougher than Kona. Well, I guess I'll be able to determine that for myself come October 9. :)

  • Comments: This race went off great. There were a few small issues but nothing worth mentioning. The volunteers and the city of St. George were great. Nothing like aid stations with tons of encouraging and helpful people to cheer you on, even late into the night. This is sure to become a popular race and I hope the course remains the same tough course for people to ‘enjoy’ in the future.

  • Comments: There were only a couple of things that I would have changed about this race. One would have been to have way more potties in T1. It took way too long to take care of business. That stupid loop on the bike on the way back into town on the second loop was ridiculous. There were so many ways to add additional mileage without doing something so stupid. The run course had a similar stupid loop with four lanes of runners all going different directions. I think the directors could have used a little more ingenuity in eliminating dumb sections like those.

  • Comments: I think one of the best moments came this morning when I broke down crying like a baby in the kitchen and got a huge group hug from my wife and daughters. One of us said this before, but we don't do this alone. I am SO thankful for the support I've had and the gift of having the opportunity to compete at IMSG that my family gave me. . . .and SERIOUSLY, I thought exercise was supposed to create testosterone. . .when does the crying stop. Congrats to everyone who took the start line Saturday! I need to go get another tissue.

  • Overall course based on my ability: Too hard

  • Comments: I hate to say this race was too hard based on my ability. Again, I really think that I was trained to do the hills, that I could have done them had I not sabotaged myself on the swim. And I'm not sure what I could have done differently on the swim. I may try this race again in the future.

  • Comments: Not sure what to think about this one. I know I sound like a jerk when I say I'm disapointed with my time when it's such a good acomplishment to just finish an IM. But I trained hard and KNEW I could do better than I did but had a bad day. It was during the run that I decided to not race IM any more. It's just to hard on me and not enjoyable. I LOVE training for an IM. In fact, I only race because I trained for it. Sort of the MUST DO after all the time I put in. But other than the swim and first 30 miles on the bike, I didn't enjoy ONE SECOND of being out there. Even when I heard the shouts of hundreds of spectators and Mike Reilly say "James Yancey, YOU are an IRONMAN!!!" Cool, but not worth the agony. I think I like the exquisit pain of Oly length races. Race so hard till you puke, but at least you know it's over in less than 3 hours. 15 hours on an IM course is not fun at all. I didn't even get to enjoy the beautiful course and it IS beautiful in St. George. Great

  • Comments: What an amazing venue, incredible volunteers. Very well organized (though still need more potties at the run!). Would love to do this again. Incredibly hard course, but a great challenge for my first IM. Now, writing this a few days afterward, I'm still really happy with how my body and mind performed. Yes, I would have liked to finish in 14 hours--my original goal. Yes, I would have liked to run more and walk less. But at the end of the day, my main goal was always just to finish with a smile on my face. And I really did that. And now I belong to an elite club of people who can call themselves an Ironman. And it's very, very cool indeed.

  • Comments: THis was the first year for this race and my first IM...so there was plenty of room for errr on both sides. However, they nailed it. But what really made this race was the beautiful scenery and the people. I WILL come back to this city for a visit outside of triathlon. It's a georgeous city with incredibly nice people. They were patient with all the road closures and unbeleivable nice. I was constantly stopped and congradulated by the locals as they pass me afterward on the street. I just cannot say enough great things about the race. If you're looking to do an IM, and you want one of the toughest courses in the world...look no further.

  • Comments: Yes, I am now an Ironman. I loved the experience and the day. I put together a realistic plan and followed it all the way in. I never felt horrible or sick. I was stressed on the run, but nothing that ever made me think I wanted to quit. My attitude was always positive. I really thought I would hit a low point sometime, but it never came. I think my training just helped me know where my limits were and to be able to plan to stay within those. I love that I got out of the lake in 880th place, got off the bike in 548th place, and finished in 561st place. My pacing strategy worked. So could I go faster? I think I can. I would actually push the second loop of the bike harder and try and push the second loop of the run a little more. I would spend a little less time in T1 and T2 to pull my times down. Overall, I am ecstatic with my results. The winner came in at 8:40, which is much slower than other Ironman races. It was tough, but I loved it. I thought it was a great test of my fitness

  • Comments: Expo was not very good. Post race was not that good but the twon and the area was very nice, picturesque. Very tough race especially if you don't do the appropriate training over the winter.
