  • Comments: I enjoyed the race. the fans were amazing on the bike. I couldn't believe how many people came out! The only part I don't like is not ending at the transition area. It makes it difficult logistically for family and friends and going back to transition after the race is difficult enough without adding in a commute.

  • Comments: Very well organized, particularly for a first time event. The way they handled the swim start was impressive. The transition/swim venue is great, and the bike is challenging. Some say they didn't like the run course, I thought it was fine. Then again, I like being in the city and I don't expect to be entertained while racing. I was a bit disappointed that there weren't gels at more aid stations and that there was no cola at any, as had been promised. The real stars of this race were the Onondaga Sheriff's Dept and the Syracuse Police Dept. They did an amazing job of traffic control on a very busy course. They were supportive of the racers, one SPD cop even gave me a high five. An outstanding job by the LEO's working this race and it was much appreciated.

  • Comments: Syracuse really came out in style and put on an awesome race. Very challenging bike course, very cold water. The run could have been more flat, but the downhill run was a nice treat after biking uphill for what felt like the majority of 56 miles. Things to work on for next season: swim-continue to work on navigation. Balanced effort left and right side. Increase stroke efficiency in order to improve time. Bike-need to get the bike fitted to make sure I've optimized both aero position and power stroke, practice on steeper and longer hills, work on aero position and proper gearing on the flats. Run-continue to practice combination of long and short runs, continue to improve posture and let legs catch me as I fall gracefully. Nutrition and diet-stop snacking, track eating and take off the next 20 pounds and decrease body fat% to the teens. Flexibility-stretch every day, especially back, quads, hamstrings and groin. Strength-rehab left calf so that it is of equal strength and endurance

  • Comments: Overall, this was a great race and my first time experiencing an M-dot race. I think it was well organized and I think the volunteers are what made the race great. I didn't care for the point to point run and then having to drive back to get my bike and gear. Logisically it was a bit of a pain to do that. The bike course is very challenging, but with more training, I could have "survived" it a little better. The race got started 15 minutes late due to traffic congestion getting into the race. There are only 2 narrow roads on which to get to the race start. But the swim waves were compressed and the race organizers made up that 15 minutes by the time the last wave went off. I would recommend this race.

  • Comments: Not exactly impressed. It's a one and done race for me. God, I couldn't imagine running down Erie Blvd in the blazing sun! The word on the street is that the race will be moved to July or August to avoid the chilly water temps. I'd take freezing my face off over melting in the sun any day. I thought it was really nice that they had a choice of hot dog, steak or chicken for finishers-that's something I've never seen before, but I don't eat meat so I had a few salt potatoes that weren't good and I had a cookie. They ran out of mac and cheese. No fruit. Just water and soda. Oh well.

  • Comments: Second HIM for me, first WTC race and first year of the Syracuse HIM. On the right track for breaking 5hr next year if all goes well. Liked doing Syracuse since I got to stay with family (free!) which makes this event a relative bargain even with the WTC cost. Challenging bike course early on became a fast, fun bike for the rest. Weather is somewhat sketchy for a race in SYR this time of year... would be better if they did this one late August, perhaps. Probably will do this one again next year, unless I feel compelled to try Savageman.

  • Comments: Can't give it a 5 b/c it needs some improvement. PROS - Incredible intersection control on both bike and run by police and national guard. - Great local support on bike course. - Great volunteers - P2P logistics were handled well - Incredible port-o-potties. See kristin's RR for a description - prob the best finishers food I have had an any race NEEDS WORK - Operation of food line created a 45min wait for some - Massage closed down at 3pm. Nearly 1/2 the participants had no chance at getting a massage. - No real need for a p2p run - Run course was the least scenic I have ever raced. Nothing like the smell of fast food and car exhaust for a large portion of the run.

  • Comments: Nothing beats a race with our friends. Each time I get a chance to race with Brad, Craig, Nate, Earl, Tim and Laura, I feel lucky. We also had awesome spectators with Heidi, Amy, Marna, Ben, Jack and Sloan. This race has me excited to race IMAZ with our crew, but also to see what I can do. I took off about 16 minutes from my 70.3 PR and about 12 minutes from my half marathon PR. Really, really happy with the results of the day. While a sub-6 race was the goal, I'm still pleased with how the day went. This was the first year for this race and you can tell they need to work out the kinks. Pros: Interesting bike course Port o potties were the absolute nicest ever. They had floor mats, cup holders, air fresheners, decorations, etc. Awesome. Lots and lots of volunteers on the course. And at every single intersection. At points, the cops were yelling at irritated drivers while they had to wait on the run course. The bike course pavement was perfect and well marked Wetsuit

  • Comments: this race has potential, but there needs to be some improvements before it's a real quality race. good: - volunteers were amazing - nicest port-a-jons in the world. floor mats, potpourri, flowers, cup holders! - great swim location and transition - nice expo - good medal - crowd support and chalk on run course bad: - logistics of check-in no where near race - finish line no where near race - food was great, but serving was poorly set up so the line was 45+ minutes long for some finishers - masage filled up for some finishers as well - parking/access to the park making the race start late - potentially short bike course

  • Comments: My goal for the race was sub 7 hours, which I managed to blow out of the water. I was secretly hoping for sub 6, which I know now is easily reachable if I can fix whatever caused my stomach to cramp up on me. For my first HIM and the end of my firs season doing Tris I am extremely happy. I have a lot to work on across all aspects, but I know what I'm capable of now. The weather turned out to be great race weather for tri short/top. I was only cold for a little bit on the bike. Overall I feel the race was very well organized, plenty of cops and national guard troopers on the run/bike course. The volunteers were amazing. Best port-o-potties ever. They had carpet, pictures, potpourri(holy cow took awhile to figure out how to spell that). Biggest problem was the run course was just plain ugly. It ran through some of the uglier parts of downtown Syracuse.

  • Comments: For the past month my swimming and cycling has been less than diligent, so going into the race I honestly had no idea what to expect from myself. No idea whatsoever! My biggest goal was to have fun & enjoy the day, hopefully run a sub-2 hour half marathon and I hoped for a small HIM PR. I would have been thrilled with a 6:15 finish. At no point did I ever expect a 6-hour finish. I'm beyond thrilled, and I'm so proud of myself!! This was my strongset and best race ever. Those 7 seconds are a killer, but I'm not stuck on them anymore bc there's no question in my mind that I capable of a sub-6 HIM. I know I can do it.

  • Comments: I was obviously quite disappointed, but tried to keep everything in perspective and look at the bright side. Like I mentioned above, it could have been much worse. That's my first and hopefully last DNF. I'm quite confident I was going to PR significantly, but what are you going to do? I'll get em next time!

  • Comments: Overall a great race, the volunteers were AWESOME. There was a ton of them and you could feel that they were happy to be there. I disliked running into what felt like the ugliest part of the city. I wish they could have had us running somewhere else. It would be way easier for the family also if the run would ended at the transition zone. No problem with getting out of Jamesville and into the city with a ton of street blocked when you don't really know the city. Overall I loved the race though, challenging yet fun! Every time I do a long event like this one I always think how long even if they like that, those days must be for the family coming to cheer on us. I am really happy that my family was there with me, and for that I thank them :)

  • Comments: 1) why no finishers gear?! that's crap for all we pay. 2) COVER THE DAMN TRAIN TRACKS!!! I ride over tracks on my routine training ride at least twice a week. i knew they were there. i am a fairly experienced rider and i still crashed. i heard of at least 4 others who did. that's unacceptable. get some damn carpet (oh, heard you did that for the last wave...nice timing... 2) THE RUN WAS UGLY...figure out something different. we don't need to finish in town. 3) the cops, national guard and voluteers did a hell of a job with a tough course crowd control - thanks!

  • Comments: Any time I can race with our gang, I am up for it. Even though this course wasn't designed in a way that allowed us to see each other more than a glimpse once, it is still amazing to know that they are out there with you. I am extremely happy with my result and proud of myself for taking that leap of faith on my running improvements to stay running tempo for duration. I didn't know if I would eventually blow up, but I knew I had to try. I am so glad I did. I really think that part of these things is just believing in yourself. If you think you can, you will.

  • Comments: Overall I am pleased that I had the opportunity to race. I did not feel like I was entered or at a big ironman event. Things seemed too spread out with the finish being in syracuse and the swim being held 13 miles away. We must be spoiled at lake placid because it is a great feeling to be in town and hanging out with 3000 of your closest friends. I did not get that triathlon feel of the race and felt kind of outa touch with the event. I should not complain I had a good race took 6th in mmy age group and probably had a shot at a role down spot for clearwater but I can not go because it cost too much and I have to work that weekend.

  • Comments: Wow!!! Now I know why they call it an Ironman. When my legs cramped up off the bike that's really when I had to dig deep down inside myself to complete the half marathon. This is one of my best accomplishments of my life.

  • Comments: People often look at how they did compared to the field, and while I do this, I look at what I am capable of. To me, the field only provides a benchmark as to your strengths and what you need to work on. Some woudl say going 102/2059 is good. Well, the only review you conduct is how you did compard to others, then this is true. Was I capable of better? Yes. What happened? I simply didn't take the prep seriously enough. Since Placid I am up 10 pounds, which aboslutely had a negative impact on the race. How much? My guess is 5-7 minutes. Why did my nutrition slip? My guess is continued strucutre since Nov 1st 2009, allows me to sub-consiously feel I deserve to cheat my nutrition ever so often-like a reward. So, I think 3-4 weeks of no structure activity may re-set my mind. Sometimes we need to stop doing what we percive to be of value (strucutred training), to get all we can out of ourselves.
