  • Comments: No race shirts, a crappy hat that says nothing about the race distance we were doing, no post race messages, took forever for age group awards to be handed out. I'm not a difficult person to please, but this years race seemed way off from the past standards.

  • Comments: Try Charleston and Setup Events put on a great race. The post race food and awards were great! I look forward to racing with them again! This year was their first year for a two transition race. The organizers did a great job communicating logistics and providing transportation between the transition areas for both athletes and spectators.

  • Comments: I hate to give a bad review to any race because I can't even imagine how hard it is to organize something this massive. However, I am sure the race reports will show that most people were frustrated and just not satisfied with how this race was run. It seems as though the sprint people had more to complain about than I did because the bike turn around was not marked and many people missed it completely. I have done other setup events in the past and they were run much more smoothly so I may try this one again but this race did not leave me with a favorable impression. There were not enough bike course volunteers to show where to turn and the traffic was a bit scary in a few places. The run course had good water stations but there were a few big potholes in the run path covered up by rain water and no one ever bothered to put a cone or sign out to warn the runners. I personally saw quite a few twisted ankles and other injuries from these holes. The medical tent had 1 person

  • Comments: Overall a decent race for level of training recently put in, swim was comparable to B2B (no current this time), transitions were faster (albeit short T1 distance here), bike was faster, only the run was really suspect versus previous half. In the end, while it was cold, windy and raining at the start, the rain subsided and the temperatures really worked to my advantage.

  • Comments: Major issue with bike transport the morning off the race. Also, on the sprint version a bunch of guys got to the turnaround before anybody was at the turn and they rode way too far. Several corners were not well marked and did not have police support. Post race food was water and coke. The event in 2012 was very well put together with regular facebook updates but this year the weather was bad, the was very little communication, and at packet pickup you got useless visors or ugly hats, no shirts were provided.

  • Comments: It was a small race with <300 but I think it was really well run. Everything seemed pretty organized. The aid stations were plentiful and stocked. They had enough finishers medals for everybody. Not much to do post-race and the band was unimpressive but I didn't stay long anyway. I would do it again next year.

  • Comments: The post race music was a little rough, keep a DJ on it's more fun for people IMHO. I realize seafood is a big deal but the shrimp creole looked fairly disgusting as a post race food, I went ahead and shelled out the csh for chic-fil-a. Overall a great race with a great atmosphere I will be doing it again, next time the whole thing on my own.

  • Comments: Really liked this race. Flat with very moderate temperatures. Loved my results as I'd hoped to break 6:30 publicly, 6:00 secretly. It was bittersweet without my wife there to share it. She was pretty bummed on Saturday to miss the race. It would have been her first HIM, too. The bike felt easier than I'd expected. I felt that my training had really prepared me for the race. The split transition was not ideal. Didn't affect my race, but single transition is certainly more convenient. Unfortunately I think TryCharleston is stuck with the dual transition layout due to traffic issues. My wife has scoped out the White Lake Half on May 14th for her to do. Sounds like a similarly flat course. I'm seriously considering joining her in this race as my recovery has gone smoothly so far. Might as well make use of all this training, right?

  • Comments: In the end, I'm pleased with this race. It was never going to be a super race for me -- my training was aimed at the Palmetto Half, not this race. But in my HIMs last year, I was aiming to go sub-5 both times and circumstances ruined that goal each time, so I am thrilled with the result. I finally got the bogeyman of sub-5 out of the way. Now I can worry about something else, like going 4:30. ;-)

  • Comments: Great race. Very well organized. Only complaint was post race food. I wanted a banana or some cookies, but all I saw was gumbo and shrimp for $8 bucks. Otherwise, will def do race again.

  • Comments: I really badly wanted sub-5. I did everything I could to put myself in a position to do it. I'd be lying if I said I'm not disappointed. But I'm pleased with how I performed under the circumstances, and assuming that I'm not hurt too badly, I will have gotten away with finishing a race that I probably should have dropped out of. UPDATE: Looks like I had a (minor) fracture in my pelvis. So that explains why running hurt... I dodged a bullet, because this could have been much worse.
