  • Comments: Somersault races are interesting to say the least. At this event there are sprint try, try-a-tri, super sprint, HIM, full iron distance, duathlon version of each, relays, kayak tri, canoe tri, swim-cycles, swim only, and four distances of running races. The overall result is that you never know where you are in relation to the others in your event. As time went on there were fewer and fewer people on the course and as a result I felt that I was way behind. It turned out I was evenly in the middle of the HIM pack and the dwindling racers was due to the shorter distances finishing. The other problem with this race is the fan support. Transition is set up in a stadium but there is generally no one there. Of course there is no entertainment or post-race events like at other races so it wouldn´t be very exciting to spend the day there anyways. There are maybe about 100 people lining the bike course (I liked the guys with cowbells on the one hill on the bike course - very Tour de France

  • Comments: The race part was well organised, nothing to say about it. The only thing is the race site is set up in such a way that there is no real race atmosphere. People finish their races and then go home ASAP.

  • Comments: Last race I had a hard time keeping to my pace and nutrition plans. For this race I tried to simplify it. Nutrition Bike – perpetuem / Cliff bar & shot blocks for variety / Gatorade Run – 1 gel / half a banana / coke / Gatorade Heart Rate Bike – high zone 2 / low zone 3 and stay below lactate threshold Run – 1st half - zone 3 / low zone 4 // 2nd half whatever I could manage! The day was perfect – it was sunny and the temp was about 11C (approx 52F) and rose to a high in the low 20’sC (70’sF). I had a great time and finished feeling strong but knowing that I pushed as hard as I could. Received an e-mail from Somersault to inform me that the Run was 1km short :(

  • Comments: Before the race, I remarked to my friend that there was another HIM in two weeks in Montreal and that if things went well here I might do that HIM as well. Once I crossed that finish line I was not so sure that I would be up to that. I was tired, my legs felt tight and I just wanted to rest. Mind you, by the next morning I felt great. A day later I felt like I participated in a 5K run rather then a half iron distance race. Today, I'm ready to sign up for that HIM in Montreal. Now if only I can figure out a way to break it to my wife...

  • Comments: Somersault events are always well organized. The bike and run courses are very flat. The 6 bike laps were Ok but I was glad there weren't more. I wouldn't do the iron distance race here for that reason (12 lap bike, 4 lap run) A good course for a first 1/2 distance race. (though I would have preferred a few hills on the run).

  • Comments: This was by far the most difficult event I have yet experience in my new-found sport. This took more combined physical and mental effort than even my spring marathon in which heatstroke almost DNF'ed me. I now have a profound respect for iron-distance racing and will not approach a full iron without due care. However, I do now know there will be a full iron somewhere in my future. But for now, I will just enjoy the victory of this race... and try to believe the reality that I ended my 1st year of triathon with a successful 1/2 iron. I have so much to be thankful for. After my shower, we returned to the race and volunteered for 2hrs at an aid-station for the full iron participants who were still on the course. I had no trouble walking out to meet them to find out what they needed as they struggled toward the aid-station and then giving them the my most heart-felt encouragement as they raced on to their finish line.

  • Comments: There were a couple of areas on the run with a lot of pylons but no volunteers, so a few extra people in those areas to (correctly) direct traffic might have helped. The volunteers at the aid stations were wonderful. Nutrition strategies worked out -- stomach and energy felt great the whole time.
