Pre-race routine:

Arrived an hour and a half early; oriented myself with transition area; walked around and spoke with other contestants. Set up my transition area.
Event warmup:

Light stretching
Swim
  • 11m 49s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 57s / 100 meters
Comments:

I swam faster than I ever have in training. I didn't feel like I was going faster. It was probably adrenaline.
What would you do differently?:

Start earlier.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I did not hurry during my transition time. I was already wearing my bike shorts, so I took my time getting on my shoes, shirt, helmet and glasses.
Bike
  • 25m 29s
  • 6 miles
  • 14.13 mile/hr
Comments:

I should have drank more water. I had some but didn't think about it.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more. Next time, I need to be more ready for the hills. I didn't stand up at all. I need to work on my climbing.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 was slower than T1. I was tired and trying to catch my breath. But I wasn't too worried about it. I planned on taking my time during the transitions. Both transition times are included in my bike time.
Run
  • 34m 39s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

I walked up three of the major hills. i just didn't have it in me. I wanted to do the run leg without walking at all. I"ll have to work on that for the next one.
What would you do differently?:

Run more hills; run more hills; run more hills...
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching and sucking air!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My fitness level. I went from the couch (and overweight) to a sprint triathlon in less than four months. When I first started working out, I couldn't even run a half mile. I'm glad to have been able to finish the race. My goal was to simply finish. I'll work on increasing my times over the next 5 months before I do my next race.

Event comments:

I had a great experience. Everyone was helpful and encouraging. My goal was to finish; I did. My next goal is to do a similar-distance race and do it faster. I've already increased the intensity in my training.

Performance:
I was near the end of the line. Since this was my first tri, I waited until near the very end to enter the pool. We jumped in 5 seconds apart. Even so, there was a bottleneck of people. I got kicked several times and I even accidentally kicked someone myself. I don't know the temperature, but the water was so cold it took my breath away when I stepped into the pool.

Age Group: 0/
Overall: 208/242
Performance:
Course: The course was clover-shaped and had a water station (the same one) at .7, 1.5 and 2.3 miles. The course went up, down and around the hill on the University of Tennessee campus that is known as "The Hill." It's well-known around here as being steep and hard to walk/run. I knew I would struggle on this hill. I hadn't trained on anything this steep.

Thanks for the encouraging remarks. I've already got two more races in sight. One is a mud run in August! That ought to be fun. The other one is a sprint tri in September. I'm hoping to get faster on my run and bike times. Thanks again for the kind words.
