Subject: Any one take CLA?
I have read a little bit about taking supplemental CLA as a weight loss "enhancer" coupled with exercise and a good diet. Has anyone else had any experience with this supplement, and would you recommend it?

I am currently taking GNC Mega Man multi vitamins and Fish Oil. I was looking over the label on the vitamins and noticed that they are pretty low in Calcium and Magnesium, so I will likely start taking an additional supplement as well.

Thanks

I just started taking it a couple of weeks ago. I don't know enough yet to make a recommendation either way.

It is good for your heart and fat metabolism but it doesn't help weight loss. i've taken it for years

I also took it at the start of a weightloss program 1 year ago. From it I got a pretty mild case of heart burn. I didn't notice any other benefits. I had stopped taking it 3 months into the wieghtloss and continued to lose about the same amount as I had while on it.
I have heard from friends that used it that (a very informal poll) it seems to work for men more so than for women.

It reduces cholesterol. I lowered my chol from 271 to 223 in about 8 months. then i added red rice yeast upon the advice of a friends. it dropped from 223 to 173 in 3 months. here is a link to some studies:

Is Red Yeast Rice a Drug or a Supplement?
Confusingly, the answer is both. One of the most important ingredients in red yeast rice is monacolin K. It's also known as lovastatin, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Mevacor.

So on one hand, red yeast rice is a traditional remedy that helps lower cholesterol. On the other, the pharmaceutical manufacturer of Mevacor argues that it owns the rights to the ingredient lovastatin.

This confusion extends to how the supplement is sold in the U.S. Because red yeast rice contains a substance classified as a prescription drug, the FDA has attempted to control its sale. In 2007, the FDA asked that three red yeast rice products -- Cholestrix by Sunburst Organics and two red yeast rice formulations by Swanson Healthcare Products (Red Yeast Rice and Red Yeast Rice/Policosonal Complex) -- be withdrawn from the market because they contained lovastatin. The FDA cited a risk of severe muscle problems that could lead to kidney disease.

Despite the FDA's attempts, many people in the U.S. still manage to get similar red yeast rice extracts from other countries or the Internet.

Studies have shown that red yeast rice can significantly lower levels of total cholesterol and specifically LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. One showed that taking 2.4 grams per day of red yeast rice reduced LDL levels by 22% and total cholesterol by 16% in 12 weeks. Another study showed that taking 1.2 grams per day lowered LDL levels by 26% in just eight weeks.
