If anyone is interested, we are planning on doing an OWS at a new venue at lake lanier and then a ride of the Iron Girl Course.

Here are the details:

Swim: Meet at 7:45 am swimming by 8am!!

Van Pugh North, it has a beach and swim area
Here are the directions and address

The address is 6838 Gaines Ferry Road, Flowrey Branch, GA. If you were taking 400 this is what the lady said to do (although mapquest is a little different):
Exit 14
Turn RT at 2nd light
Turn RT at Buford Damn Road
Go to end of Buford Damn Road
Turn LFT on Water Works
Turn RT at stop sign on Gree
Turn LFT on McEver
Pass over Friendship Rd
Turn LFT on Gaines Ferry and follow signs

$4 to park there.

Ride:

We will ride the Iron Girl route, it is 18 miles, i know some of us interested may do it twice.

Here's a link to the race course - http://www.irongirl.com/Assets/Atlanta+Photos/Atlanta+Course+Map.pdf

We can try and park in the parking lot on the right just before you get to the gates of the Lake Lanier water park.  The lot is off on the right after you pass a big marina.  Directions are here - http://www.lakelanierislands.com/content.asp?pid=816.

See yall there!

All - we need to change the location of the swim.  I was the one who researched this location through the US Army Corps who manges the lakes.  I called back this morning to verify that this was a good place to swim and actually spoke to a ranger who told me that it is not.  I then called a friend who took me to Buford Dam once last year to see where he swims and it is West Bank.  He was there a couple of weeks ago and it is fine to swim - it is in a cove.  I called back and talked to the Ranger and he said yes - this would be a good place to go.  Also found out that where this is is on the back side of the Iron Girl Course so if we have our maps we can just start the bike here and not have to drive.

Address is: 3500 Buford Dam Road, Cumming, GA
Directions if coming from 400:
Exit 14 and you will veer right
Turn LFT on Market Place Blvd (I think it's first light and there is a Home Depot there)
Turn RT on Buford Dam Road and follow signs to West Bank Park

Per Lisa's request, I have mapped out the IG course as a Garmin Course.  West Bank Park is 4-5 miles from the course so depending on how far you go into Lake Lanier Water Park, it makes for a 20-25 mile ride.  For those with Garmins, the file is attached.  The instructions are:

  • Save Irongirl.zip file to your desktop
  • Unzip file (should just be able to double click on it) and save IronGirl.tcx to your desktop.
  • Open Garmin Training Center
  • Import IronGirl.tcx file
  • Synch Garmin Training Center to your device and select IronGirl as a course to synch to your device.

I plan on being there to supervise the swim.  I don't want anyone drowning before race day.

If you can't get the file to load, I'll load it for you on Sunday morning.

JC

J22 - thanks so much for doing this!  I actually got it to work and loaded onto my Garmin.  what happens if we end up not going into Lake Lanier?  Will the garmin realize we skipped it and pick up where we turn around?

Nothing happens. The course is a dark line on your Garmin that you follow.

Maybe I didn't ask that right.  Will the course pick up in the right place if we skip some or will in no longer work?

Did you get to do this OWS and ride?  West Bank is NOT close to the Irongirl bike course.  It is a good distance (and one SERIOUS climb away).  West Bank Park is in Forsyth County.

I did the "My First Tri" this weekend.  The bike route is very simmilar.  Good news:  it's pretty fast and flat.  There is one moderate climb on New Bethany Road.  Everything else is rolling.  Bad news:  There is a lot of construction at Lake Lanier Island Resort.  We had to ride through about 400 yards of crushed gravel.  Several people slidout (including a 60 year old woman) and ended up with flats.  Be prepared to do a little off roading!  BTW, I put the route in at mapmyride.com so that you can see the elvation changes:http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ga/buford/842487785132

Please try to do this again!  I would love to get some group swims in before the race.  I also am trying to find an Olympic length race in late summer or fall.  Anyone know of a "newbee" friendly race in Georgia area?

Thanks for setting up the OWS and ride today.  I had a lot of fun and was really great to meet all of you.  Hope we can do it again (maybe before the race?).

We did do it and it was close to the IG ride.  We picked the course up in the middle on Buford Dam road.  Ended up with about 20 miles without going into Lake Lanier Island.  And West Bank was a great place to swim.  There were a couple of buoys to swim around.  Probably 300-400 years one trip around.  And we all did two.   It was fun!
