Spelling checking in rich text editor

Any ideas why the rich text editor will make Firefox's built in spell checker go wacky?  There are many times when a clearly misspelled word will not be highlighted (with the red squiggle under it).

However if you click around the text box a few times BING it'll pop up as misspelled.
