Swim
Comments: First open water swim - soooooo different than training in a pool. It wasn't the lack of wetsuit or just being in a lake - it was the feeling of being off course, bumping into people, and generally not being able to get settled into a regular stroke. The start was fine as this was what I was expecting from reading about mass starts - start at the front and go strong, it was just after the first 50-75m that I was unprepared for. What would you do differently?: Train in open water and/or get a wetsuit! Better focus on where I am in relation to others and the course at all times. Do not get disturbed when bumping happens. Transition 1
Comments: Time included in bike. Overshot my aisle by one... oops. No wetsuit to get off was nice, but getting cycling jersey on was difficult. Ripped the bottom pins from the race number during the struggle. What would you do differently?: Get a race belt. Forget about bike gloves. Pay better attention to where my stuff is. Practise getting the bike off the rack. Bike
Comments: Nice ride. Passed many people which is always very motivating. What would you do differently?: Look into aero bars for my road bike, or better yet, buy a tri bike. Transition 2
Comments: Time included in bike. Undershot my aisle by one this time... oops. What would you do differently?: Work on how to rack a bike and once again, pay attention to where my stuff is. Run
Comments: Running is not my thing (yet!)... I stuck to my plan of taking the first half easy and then work harder on the second half. Tough to get going, but didn't walk at all. What would you do differently?: Keep training. Post race
Warm down: Water was nice. Just walked around and watched others finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough sleep, training in open water. Event comments: Excellent first race for me overall. It was definitely a good place to learn a few things about the sport. Watching the sprint afterwards gave me some pointers as well. Going into my sprints in the next few months will be easier now that I have done this race. Oh yeah, getting a third place in my age category was amazing! Last updated: 2006-06-05 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:30, fruit for breakfast, drove the hour to Milton. Parked, unloaded stuff at transistion - chatted with a few fellow first timers. Did the registration thing - all very well layed out with excellent volunteers.
Heard that water was a warm 69, but noticed that all but a few had wetsuits. Whatever, I thought, got in and swam to the buoy a few times and then stayed in the water till start.
