Pre-race routine:

Before the race i know i wont be able to sleep, so i took Benadryl . Worked well i slept for 6 hours best sleep i had in all the races i went. Woke up 3:30 am . Checked everything first time i have to prepare for 2 Transitions. I ate 2 powerbars , 1 banana bottle of gatorade. I have everything loaded to my car went to T2 dropped my run stuff, Went to T1 dropped my bike and my stuff went back to the hotel left the car for my wife walked back to T1 and
Event warmup:

Everything prepared at T1 and T2 race is at 7 am. I ate 1 Gu and drank Skratch. I suit up at 6:20am head to the lake for a warm-up. Lake tempt warmer than air . I just felt the water be comfortable picked my spot for the mass start.
Swim
  • 1h 00m 29s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim have always been my weakest event. I never really did well in swimming i can comeout the water strong , but i have never really been fast . I will always be slow in water. But i am slower than my previous HIM (55 mins).

What would you do differently?:

I dont know probably try to be better at frontcrawl.
Transition 1
  • 08m 51s
Comments:

after the swim i feel like throwing up , the good thing about our T's we have our own stool so sat down a bit to catch my breath. Took Gu and drank Skratch so before i left want to make sure i got all i need 2 hour bottle of Skratch and 1.5 our aerobar bottle.
What would you do differently?:

none
Bike
  • 3h 45m 29s
  • 56 miles
  • 14.90 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the event i thought i would do well. I was humbled to the pulp. On the first hour i was only able to cover 15 miles the hills are steep and gradually going up and goes down fast and short then climb again. The second hour i am still just averaging 14 mi/hr and i have been climbing at 8 mph. The hills are too steep for me after two hours my chain came off the crank i have to step off and fix it. i already knew then my legs are toasted and theres no way to PR my previous HIM. After 3 hours on the road i am not even at mile 50 i just wish this enduring punishment of hills would just end. Finally i can see the landmark of T2 uphill. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/488677498
What would you do differently?:

I should have practiced more hills , my training plan should have been bike focus on hills , my short rides and long rides should have been on hills. My total ascent was 2686.6 ft. my previous HIM was 1831 ft (3:10:00).
Transition 2
  • 05m 14s
Comments:

i was only 20 feet away from T2 we are required to hop off. As soon as i hop off my legs are in pain enough to sit my butt on the pavement people came to me to help me i stood up with my bike and after 10 ft. my legs are on stiff pain and i sat my butt again on the ground a guy helped me to hold my bike and they approached me if im ok to continue i said give a minute , they told me i still have to walk to the timing matt 10 ft. away with my bike or my bike leg will not be official i limped again for 10 ft. I thought that was it the pain subsided to a tolerable pain. I still have time to walk the run and bear the pain.
What would you do differently?:

Well what can i say i did not prepare for the brutal bike course and i have to pay for the price.
Run
  • 2h 56m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

The run is no different than the bike , they are steep hills so i figure ill walk going up and try yo run going down. Its been like that for the next 5 miles. For the next four miles i cant even run on flat anymore so running is only downhill. At mile 9 i just cant run anymore its all walking from then on .The volunteers are great and helpful i would have DNF'd without them. Finally i can see T2/Finish uphill. My boy met me at the finish line finally the torture is over. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/489206637
What would you do differently?:

I never did any uphill run my training for the mileage is right but i did not do any uphill runs plus my legs are already wrecked from the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

drank water and skratch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me and my training. I should have studied the race more and adjust my training according to the race. This is a bike focus course mostly on hills.

Event comments:

This is a very humbling experience for me and my OA Time proves my poor performance. It is a learning experience for me I know what to do next time.

I would do the race again its a good preparation for the full ironman. Mark Wilson RD as always did a great job. I just hope more people will appreciate HITS Triathlon. They try to do their best for everyone.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
