Chattanooga, Tennessee
United States
Total Time = 4h 36m 28s
Overall Rank = 54/2180
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/164
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30AM... yes 3:30AM. Ate a light breakfast and loaded into the car to go to the race site. I was staying with my team in a cabin just outside of town on the river.
Event warmup:

None, stood around like everyone else waiting for the swim.
Swim
  • 29m 51s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went pretty well. I was hoping for more of a river swim with current, but I'll take a calm cool swim too. Tried to start as close to the front as I could so I could be on the bike course pretty much by myself and avoid the crowds.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 05m 33s
Comments:

There was a long uphill run into transition. In the past my HR has climbed to 190 when going vertical coming out of the water so I took my time here and didn't push it. Got on the bike with a HR of 142.... a low PR for me.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe move a little faster, I lost a lot of time here to the rest of the podium competition.
Bike
  • 2h 24m 41s
  • 56.7 miles
  • 23.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Well this was bad. The visor fell off my helmet less than a mile in and I had to ride into the rain with nothing shielding my eyes. Then coming down a massive hill at 42mph my disc cover failed and shredded, and wrapped itself around my cassette. I lost 4 minutes removing it from my cassette and getting moving again. Other than that it was all good. Paced very easy, and drank 6 bottles on the course. Was pretty lonely out there since I seeded myself near the front of the swim, started catching a few pro women at the end of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not have equipment failures would be nice.
Transition 2
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Went ok, not lightening fast or anything
Run
  • 1h 33m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Best run I've had off the bike at this distance. Got off the bike and the legs felt fresh and my HR was low. Held the pace at Z2 up until mile 8 then I started to throw down the hammer. Never let up and never faded. Took sponges, gatorade, and dowsed myself with ice water at every aid station.
What would you do differently?:

I think I left a lot out on the course. Could have paced stronger.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate pizza

What limited your ability to perform faster:

equipment failures on the bike

Event comments:

Great race. The volunteers were amazing and all the aid stations were well supplied and staffed. Couldn't have had better weather either: nice a cool with a slight drizzle at times on the bike. The run course was amazing and really showed off the city well. If I'm racing next year this one is on the radar.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
